Seattle Sounders FC prevails over archrival Portland Timbers FC 2-1 after a bizarre second half in one of the marquee matches in Major League Soccer. Sounders goalkeeper Stefan Frei saves a penalty kick by Timbers star Diego Valeri, but VAR shows encroachment, leading to a retake. Valeri’s second attempt hits the post and bounces out to him, but he illegally redirects it into the back of the net without another player touching it first. Minutes later, the Sounders win a penalty kick of their own, and Raul Ruidiaz tucks it away. Seattle’s all-time leading scorer, Fredy Montero, makes it 2-0 with a header from a set piece to seal the three points. The Timbers don’t go away quietly, though, as Bill Tuiloma buries a brilliant free kick in the final minutes.
