Vanderbilt hires former Vols’ defensive coordinator

Bob Shoop is returning to Vanderbilt in 2025. He will serve as a senior defensive analyst for the Commodores.

Shoop returns to the Southeastern Conference after a two-year stint as Tennessee’s defensive coordinator from 2016-17. He was also a defensive coordinator and safeties coach for Vanderbilt from 2011-13.

Shoop’s other stint in the SEC as a defensive coordinator was at Mississippi State from 2018-19.

During his tenure as the Vols’ defensive coordinator, Tennessee went 9-4 (4-4 SEC) in 2016 and defeated Nebraska in the Music City Bowl. The Vols were also victorious against Florida and Georgia in consecutive weeks.

Tennessee went 4-8 (0-8 SEC) in 2017. Butch Jones was relieved of his duties as Tennessee’s head coach with two games remaining in the regular-season.

Since departing Tennessee after the 2017 campaign, Shoop has served as defensive coordinator and safeties coach at Mississippi State (2018-19), Michigan’s safeties coach (2020), a defensive analyst at Miami (2021), defensive coordinator and safeties coach at USF (2022), defensive backs coach with the Birmingham Stallions (2023) and Marshall’s safeties coach (2024).
