Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is now his own agent.
The Oklahoma City Thunder star parted with his representation Tuesday, according to NBA insider Chris Haynes. Gilgeous-Alexander will act as his own representation for future on-court matters.
It’s unclear what led to the split exactly. Gilgeous-Alexander said he plans to keep his separate representation in place for off-court deals.
In Gilgeous-Alexander’s defense, there isn’t much negotiating expected in his next deal. He is eligible to sign a four-year, $294.3 million supermax extension with the franchise this summer, which would keep him in Oklahoma City through the 2030-31 season. He is currently in the third year of a five-year, $179.3 million deal.
Assuming that’s what he wants to do — and the Thunder are on board — Gilgeous-Alexander’s next extension should be fairly straightforward. The price is capped by the league, so he can’t negotiate for more money. By splitting with his agent, he will save himself from having to pay an agent fee on a deal that would seem to already be in place.
It’s unclear if this is a long-term play for Gilgeous-Alexander or if he will opt to hire a new agent later in his career, when his contracts are more complicated.
Gilgeous-Alexander has averaged a career-high 32.5 points this season, which is the best scoring output in the league. The MVP candidate has averaged 6.1 assists and 5.1 rebounds, too, and he dropped three 50-point games within the past month. The 26-year-old is in his seventh season in the league, and he just picked up his third straight All-Star nod.
Gilgeous-Alexander and the Thunder will return from the All-Star break on Friday and take on the Utah Jazz. They hold a 44-10 record, which gives them an eight-game lead in the Western Conference standings.
