9 months ago, the Atlanta Hawks were 2 games away from making the NBA Finals. They had split the first 4 games of the ECF finals with the eventual champion Bucks, including winning a game in Milwaukee… before falling in 6 games. Now, have missed the playoffs completely after finishing as the 9 seed and losing in the play-in game.

This also comes AFTER an offseason in which they signed Trae Young, John Collins, and Clint Capela to contract extensions worth almost $400 million. After 3 full years of tanking as they transitioned out of the Mike Budenholzer era… a stretch that brought zero significant team achievements to the fanbase… they had finally found their way out last year in dramatic fashion… yet now find themselves largely back where they started prior to the conference finals run – a team without much direction.

They have Trae Young… who had a fantastic season as we will get into… but I am not sure they know any more now how to build around him properly than they did at this time last year. They have a young roster that IN THEORY should continue to grow together over the next few years… but this setback in progress this year is certainly alarming. And don’t get me wrong, there is still hope… but they as well as their fans are certainly looking around wondering what just happened.
