Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty on Tuesday on all charges he faced in connection with the May 2020 death of George Floyd.
A jury of six white, four Black and two multi-racial jurors found Chauvin guilty of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter after 10 hours of deliberation over two days. Chauvin, 45, faces a maximum sentence of 40 years for the second-degree unintentional murder conviction, 25 years for the third-degree murder conviction and 10 years for second-degree manslaughter.
Video showed Chauvin kneeling on Floyd’s neck for nine minutes and 29 seconds, creating a nationwide call for justice in the latter’s death. The same was true for the sports world. Floyd’s death also contributed to a flood of demonstrations and marches calling for an end to systemic racism and racial injustice.
Below are some of the reactions from throughout the sports world as Chauvin was found guilty:
Justice and Accountability! Things I never thought I would see. There’s much more work to do, but this is an amazing start working toward the reform this country NEEDS!

Dusty Baker on Derek Chauvin found guilty on all charges: “It’s never a time to celebrate when someone’s killed. My thoughts and prayers go to the Floyd family. Maybe this’ll help us heal and we’ll cease with the violence.” pic.twitter.com/Eg9yAt8MAU

Since we’re talking about justice and accountability. Athletes, community leaders, church leaders and anybody who cares we have to come together and put a stop to this. We can’t be mad when a cop kills a black person when we out here killing each other and our children. pic.twitter.com/b5Z6i2MNCr

“We’re pleased that justice was served. Your heart goes out to the Floyd family because there’s nothing you can do to bring him back. Obviously in society, this is no place for racism or bigotry. We have to do better. As a country, we have to do better.” – Tom Thibodeau pic.twitter.com/sdTJp9iGFU

Twitter stays arguing about the semantics. I don’t care what y’all say- GEORGE FLOYD WAS MURDERED. Derek Chavin should be under the jail. These two things are true in this instance.
