But announced late in 2021 that she was not ready to participate at the highest level. That withdrawal meant the former world No 1 hasn’t won a Grand Slam title since the 2017 Australian Open. Now ranked No 59, Williams is not yet clear if she will be making a comeback in 2022.
But McEnroe believes this is the year for Williams to shine again. “Serena looks as though she is still training and trying to get herself ready and absolutely wants to try and break the record,” seven-time Grand Slam champion McEnroe told Eurosport.
“She seems very motivated still and I anticipate her coming back and making a real run at Wimbledon or trying to do one more US Open.” Winning a major this year would see her equal Margaret Court’s all-time record of 24 Grand Slams.
McEnroe added: “She is desperate for one more even though it doesn’t change anything in my book. Recently, Williams posted a picture on her Instagram, where Olympia and she are seen striking a pose, sitting back to back. Williams is wearing the black-red and pink outfit by Nike that she had worn at the Australian Open 2021. Caroline Wozniacki, who is great friends with Williams off-court, reacted to the post with ‘heart’ and ‘heart-eyes’ emojis.
Serena’s coach Patrick Mouratoglou also commented on the picture, saying it was an “Incredible pic!” Recently on Twitter, Serena replied to a tweet saying “Coming!!!!” when a Twitter user asked her when she will be back. This sent Twitterati into a frenzy, as fans started to speculate whether this was indicative of Serena’s return to the circuit.
The post with Olympia also had the caption “next”. Fans of the American superstar were hopeful of her return in the hard-court season at the Australian Open. But they were disappointed when Williams announced that her recovery was not quite done yet.
