Marcus Rashford’s days at Manchester United look almost certainly numbered after a fiery comment from manager Ruben Amorim.

The England international hasn’t featured in a matchday squad for the Red Devils since December 12 and was once again left out for their recent win against Fulham.

Amorim didn’t hold back when asked about Rashford’s absence. The United boss delivered a scathing remark, suggesting he’d rather play 63-year-old goalkeeping coach Jorge Vital than Rashford unless the forward drastically improves his efforts in training.

What Rio Ferdinand said on Rashford’s United future

United legend Rio Ferdinand has now weighed in on the controversy, calling Amorim’s remark a “damning comment” that leaves Rashford with “no way back” at Old Trafford.

Speaking on his podcast (Rio Ferdinand Presents), Ferdinand said Rashford should feel ashamed after his manager openly questioned his work ethic. “For someone to question your application, to say you’re not giving 100 percent for the team, that’s a huge blow to your pride and ego,” he stated.

The former United defender believes Amorim’s comments were calculated, hinting that the manager already sees no place for Rashford in his plans. “He’s pulled out the nine-millimeter revolver and gone ‘bang’,” Ferdinand added, stressing that such criticism leaves little room for redemption.

At 27, Rashford may now be heading for a January exit, with Barcelona reportedly among the teams interested in securing his services.

The forward, once hailed as one of United’s brightest stars, is at a crossroads in his career. A move away from his boyhood club looks like the best option for all concerned, but there is no guarantee he will secure a departure before the transfer deadline on February 3.

Amorim and his squad will shift their focus to Thursday’s Europa League clash against FCSB, but all eyes remain on the unfolding Rashford saga. The coach will have the chance to speak again when he previews that game on Wednesday.
