Was this one of the best teams ever? Paul Konerko, Mark Buehrle, AJ Pierzynski and more talk about the challenges of winning a World Series and the legacy of their team in ‘05 Forever, presented by @Rate_Official

In order to end 88 years without a World Series title in Chicago, general manager Ken Williams spent the offseason overhauling the roster, trading for speedy outfielder Scott Podsednik, and signing veteran outfielder Jermaine Dye and Japanese second baseman Tadahito Iguchi. During the season, manager Ozzie Guillén guided the White Sox to an American League-best 99 wins. Although Cleveland came within 1.5 games in September, the Sox ultimately went wire-to-wire and clinched the AL Central title on September 29.

Their first matchup in the playoffs: the defending champion Boston Red Sox, who had broken their own championship drought the previous season. Orlando “El Duque” Hernández, who signed with Chicago in the offseason, helped secure the three-game sweep after escaping a bases-loaded, no-out situation in Game 3 of the ALDS.

The ALCS saw history. At a pivotal moment, AJ Pierzynski struck out, but with the ball hitting the dirt, he ran to first base. It was ruled a dropped third strike and Pierzynski was awarded first base. The White Sox rallied in that inning to win the game. It was a controversial call that many believe led to replay review in baseball.

In the same series, Mark Buehrle, José Contreras, Jon Garland and Freddy García threw four straight complete games, a feat that has not been accomplished since, as the White Sox advanced to the World Series.

“We will never see that again.” – Joe Buck, World Series Broadcaster.

The White Sox entered the World Series against the National League Houston Astros. The 2005 team faced Roger Clemens, Andy Pettitte and Hall of Famers Jeff Bagwell and Craig Biggio.

A Paul Konerko grand slam, unlikely home runs from Scott Podsednik and Geoff Blum, Juan Uribe diving into the stands and Bobby Jenks closing out the four-game sweep – these are the moments fans remember forever. Hear the first-hand account and watch behind-the-scenes footage of the team that accomplished it all. ‘05 Forever, a celebration of the 20th anniversary of the 2005 World Series team, drops this summer.
