As soon as initial reports that the Mavericks had agreed to trade superstar Luka Doncic to the Lakers were verified, fans immediately circled the first meeting between Dallas and Los Angeles on their calendars.

Just over three weeks later, that day is here.

On Tuesday, Kyrie Irving and the injury-riddled Mavs are in California to face a Lakers team coming off one of their biggest wins this season. On Saturday, Doncic broke out, finishing with 32 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists in a 23-point win over the Nuggets in a primetime showcase.

Dallas, on the other hand, is still without big men Anthony Davis, Daniel Gafford and Dereck Lively II, and is coming off a 24-point loss to Golden State in a Sunday afternoon matinee. The Mavericks are in the thick of the West’s playoff race with a 31-27 record but will be without their trio of bigs for at least two more weeks.

That said, most eyes will be on the Lakers’ trio of Doncic, LeBron James and Austin Reaves. The circumstances and reporting surrounding the trade lead many to believe that revenge will be on the mind of Doncic, who has found his groove and is learning to play off his co-stars.

12:17 a.m. — The Lakers are starting to pull away with turnovers in the final minutes of regulation. Irving is doing his best to keep Dallas in it with 30 points, but Los Angeles is in command with under two minutes remaining.

12:12 a.m. — Once again, Doncic finds James to extend the Lakers’ lead. Assist No. 11 for Doncic makes it 96-91 Los Angeles.

12:08 a.m. — Pick your poison: Doncic or James.

12:06 a.m. — With just over five minutes remaining, we are tied at 91 points. Thompson is on fire from deep, Doncic has secured a triple-double against his former squad, and James is finding his rhythm, now up to 20 points. Buckle up. 

12:04 a.m. — Klay Thompson is up to 22 points on 8-15 shooting and five 3-pointers. He’s played a significant role in Dallas’ offense tonight, and he connects on a three to tie the game at 88.  

12:02 a.m. — LeBron James is heating up.

12:00 a.m. — There have been a few non-calls for the Lakers in the early fourth quarter, keeping this game close. Intensity is rising in Crypto.com Arena with Doncic still on the bench.

End of third quarter: Lakers 78, Mavericks 77

11:52 p.m. — With 12 minutes remaining, Los Angeles is holding onto its one-point advantage. Doncic (5-14) hasn’t had his best scoring night, but 20 points from Austin Reaves and 11 from James have alleviated those woes against his former team. Dallas, however, has gotten 27 points from Kyrie Irving and at least two 3-pointers from four other players.

11:49 p.m. — The Mavericks have cut their deficit to just one point via their offense off the bench, led by Dante Exum and Spencer Dinwiddie. Dallas has hung around in this game all night.

11:48 p.m. — Anthony Davis had some fun on the bench during some jawing between Jarred Vanderbilt and the Mavericks:

11:42 p.m. — Doncic has struggled shooting the ball tonight, now 1-7 from three. But his rebounding, playmaking and even some strong defense have helped the Lakers, who are still holding onto a slim advantage late in the third quarter. 

11:33 p.m. — We have a close matchup in Los Angeles. Kyrie Irving and Spencer Dinwiddie drain back-to-back shots from deep, and Dallas makes it a 70-67 deficit. Irving, Christie and Klay Thompson are all in double-figure scoring for the Mavericks.

11:07 p.m. — The Mavericks got this matchup back within single-digits in the final minutes of the second quarter. Max Christie, yet another member of the Los Angeles-Dallas trade a few weeks back, connected on a pair of threes to reach 10 points and keep his squad within striking distance.

11:02 p.m. — Doncic is already approaching triple-double territory as the Lakers have built a double-digit advantage. Reaves leads the team with 14 points, but Doncic has had an all-around impact.

10:54 p.m. — LeBron James got hit with a “too small” by 6-foot-6 Naji Marshall. 

10:53 p.m. — Luka Doncic may have eyes on the back of his head. He finds Reaves for three for a no-look assist.

10:47 p.m. — Dallas owns a six-point deficit heading into a timeout, but has struggled from deep. The Mavericks are 3-14 from 3-point range around the halfway point of the second quarter.

10:43 p.m. — With Doncic on the bench to begin the second quarter, the Lakers are holding onto their lead. Rui Hachimura, Austin Reaves and James joined Doncic with at least seven points in the early action.

End of first quarter: Lakers 28, Mavericks 20

10:34 p.m. — It’s Los Angeles with the lead at the end of the first frame. But Irving, with 14 of the Mavericks’ 20 points, is already putting together a strong performance. Doncic and James have combined for 16 of the Lakers’ 28 points.

10:19 p.m. — Here comes Luka Doncic. It didn’t take him long to start the show in this highly anticipated matchup, as he buries a three and gives the Mavericks’ bench a stare down. The Lakers lead 19-14, and it doesn’t appear that Doncic will be shy about any hard feelings tonight.

10:14 p.m. — Irving is on fire in the first quarter. He gets Dallas back within two points after facing an early deficit. He’s already up to 10 points, including a pair of threes over Doncic and James.
