When Major League Soccer announced Inter Miami as an expansion club for the 2020 season, the club’s owner, Manchester United, Real Madrid and LA Galaxy legend David Beckham, promoted his vision of making Miami the marquee destination for world superstars making the move to North America. The likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi were mentioned, but Beckham’s major signings from Europe in 2020 were former Juventus stars Gonzalo Higuain and Blaise Matuidi, which helped set up a roster compliance crisis ahead of the 2021 season. After missing the playoffs in 2020, Beckham replaced Diego Alonso with a new manager, his former Man United teammate Phil Neville, and the club’s big additions included a pair of players from the EFL Championship: longtime Stoke City defender Ryan Shawcross and former Arsenal and West Brom left back Kieran Gibbs.

0:00 ESPN FC’s Sebastian Salazar and Herculez Gomez discuss the top-to-bottom management of Inter Miami as it enters Year 2 in MLS and question whether a recent expansion team has been run as poorly since Chivas USA, which burst on the scene in Los Angeles with ambition in 2005 only to cease operations 10 years later.
0:42 Gomez runs through the litany of promises made by Beckham and Miami’s ownership team before the 2020 season and explains how they have failed to deliver on many of them.
2:08 Looking toward Miami’s first game of the 2021 season vs. LA Galaxy (Sunday, 3 p.m. ET, ABC), Gomez explains why Galaxy star Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez is in position to improve on his debut season by scoring at least 15 goals this time around.
