The OKC Thunder rebuild has been one of the most successful ones that the NBA has witnessed in recent years. Sam Presti has now produced a successful young core composed of first-time NBA all-star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, elite playmaking guard Josh Giddey, rookie of the year contender Jalen Williams, and defensive specialist Lu Dort. Four years after trading Paul George and Russell Westbrook, the Thunder are headed to the play-in tournament vs. the Pelicans and are primed to make it back to the NBA postseason. The Okc Thunder are doing this despite their 2nd overall pick 7-foot unicorn Chet Holmgren still sidelined. The crazy thing is, Oklahoma City still owns 13 first-round picks over the next 5 NBA drafts, while also having other young core pieces like Aleksej Pokusevski, Jaylin Williams, Ousmane Dieng, and Isaiah Joe.
Not a lot of people expected the Thunder to make the playoffs this season. OKC was expected to be tanking in order to qualify for the Victor Wembanyama sweepstakes in the 2023 NBA draft. But right now, the OKC Thunder’s rebuild and future are looking as bright as ever despite being the 2nd youngest team in NBA history. Unlike other young rebuilding teams like the Orlando Magic, Houston Rockets, and San Antonio Spurs, the Thunder already look like a few pieces away from being championship contenders. When Chet Holmgren steps on the court, he will join an OKC young core of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Josh Giddey, Jalen Williams, and Lu Dort. Let’s look into how the Oklahoma City Thunder have changed NBA rebuilds.
