With the closing of the 2021 NFL Draft and signing of a handful of undrafted free agents, the Carolina Panthers now have their roster set heading into the summer. Obviously, this roster will change a lot as we head through the warm months, so take it easy on declaring any future Pro Bowlers. Here is my first crack at the current Panthers defensive depth chart:
Defense
Post Draft 2021 Defensive Depth Chart
LDE DI DI RDE DE/OLB OLB ILB CB1 S CB2 CB3
Yetur Gross-Matos Derrick Brown DaQuan Jones Brian Burns Haason Reddick Shaq Thompson Denzel Perryman Jaycee Horn Juston Burris A.J. Bouye Donte Jackson
Morgan Fox Bravvion Roy Daviyon Nixon Marquis Haynes Christian Miller Jeremy Chinn Jermaine Carter Rashaan Melvin Sam Franklin Troy Pride Jr. Stanley Thomas-Oliver III
Austin Larkin Phil Hoskins Mike Panasiuk Frank Herron Daniel Bituli Chris Orr Keith Taylor Kenny Robinson Myles Hartsfield Jalen Julius
P.J. Johnson Frankie Luvu Clay Johnston Sean Chandler
Obviously this is very early on in the process, and there’s no way of knowing who the coaching staff values more than whom. I tried to give preference to drafted players since the team spent capital to acquire them. Many of the names on this depth chart are unrecognizable for most fans, and most of those guys are likely camp bodies. However, there are always at least a couple surprise players who ball out in camp and preseason, eventually making the active roster.
Defense, particularly, can be complicated as to how you list someone. We all know Haason Reddick is going to be on the field a lot, and so will Jeremy Chinn, but where? They are listed at the position I think we will see them most, and I have just condensed the safeties grouping into a general “S” accordingly. There is a CB3 slot which I think reflects the fact I consider CB3 a starter, and that Donte Jackson is going to be transitioned into the nickel as a starter while we ask our outside corners to play a lot more physical in press man.
