After the Mets issued a qualifying offer to Luis Severino at the beginning of the offseason, it appears the right-hander will likely decline in pursuit of a multi-year deal instead, reports The Athletic’s Will Sammon.
If that’s the case, Severino will be turning down $21.05 million for the 2025 season and New York will receive draft compensation if he signs with a different team.
Severino wasn’t the only player the Mets extended the qualifying offer to this offseason as the 30-year-old joined Pete Alonso and Sean Manaea — both who will more than likely reject the offer as well. However, of the three it was possible that Severino might’ve accepted it after an up and down campaign and his first fully healthy season in six years.
Signing a one-year, $10 million deal with the Mets last offseason after eight seasons with the Yankees, the right-hander went 11-7 with a 3.91 ERA (1.24 WHIP) in 31 starts spanning 182 innings in 2024 — his most since 2018.
At his best, Severino showed flashes of the ace-in-making he was set to become in the Bronx where he was selected to two All-Star appearances, including a complete-game shutout against the Miami Marlins on Aug. 17.
Now, he’ll look to parlay that into a multi-year deal — whether in New York or elsewhere — likely in the two-to-three-year range.
