In a career filled with injuries, India’s tennis sensation Karman Kaur Thandi battled through many obstacles to make a name for herself in the sport. At the age of 20, Karman reached a career-best singles rank of 196 in 2018 and became only the sixth Indian woman to have cracked the top 200 of the WTA. However, the fate had other plans in store as the world got hit by COVID-19 and all the activities were put on hold. Later in 2022, Karman bounced back in style and became India’s No 1 ranked women’s singles tennis player.

Recently, the 25-year-old star opened up about the challenges that she faced in her career and also revealed how she overcame all the problems.

“There have been numerous obstacles that I have overcome. But most importantly, I have been reminded of the resilience, the determination, and the strength that guided me through every step in my journey and having a family, who is there with my through thick and thin. So, growing up watching all this has really made me what I am today. Because from a very young age, I was taught the value of education and self-belief that no matter what, if I believe in myself, I can overcome every obstacle in my life. I must say that these values have been the foundation of my journey,” Karman told NDTV.

On being asked about her biggest support, Karman said, “My parents, my brother, and of course, Adi sir (Aditya Sachdeva). I had joined him when I was very young and it has been a long, long journey. He is like a family and a father-figure to me. He is not just a tennis coach but also a mentor to me. He knows my routines.”

Karman tied knot with Indian hockey star Gurjan Singh in November, 2023. Talking about her married life, Karman stated that marrying a sportsperson really turned out to be a blessing for her.

“As a sportsperson, you need someone who understands your routine and how much effort a player has to put in. No matter what are the situations, whether it’s a win or loss, it’s very important to have a family, coach, and a partner, who understands you,” said Karman.

Currently out due another injury, the tennis star further shared her mantra to remain stress-free and fit.

“Back in 2019, when I was at the peak of my career and suddenly had my shoulder injury, it was my first experience of staying out of the circuit. It felt frustrating to not able to compete and win titles. As players, we have to think that everyone is going through with something or the other. But sometimes, there are situations, about which you can’t do anything. I have taken some relaxation techniques and all the more, I have the support of the RoundGlass Academy, who have shown me the path,” said Karman.

“They have all the experts, who have helped me to focus on my goals. they have shown my different hobbies because now I have incorporated yoga in my routine, which I wasn’t doing regularly. So, in this downtime, I would say that there a lot of things to learn and I am learning a lot about myself. This is time when I can actually think about these things,” she added.
