Entering the 2021 NBA draft lottery, the Oklahoma City Thunder had a 45 percent chance to land at least one top-4 pick and a 25 percent chance to land two top-5 picks. Instead, OKC will select 6th overall in the upcoming 2021 NBA draft. Oklahoma City will also own the 16th and 18th first round picks this year, together with three other second rounders. Although this puts the Thunder in a non-ideal situation, OKC General Manager Sam Presti has accumulated a total of 18 first round picks and 18 second round picks over the next 7 years, which he can use to potentially trade up in the draft. The Thunder also have a ton of young players plus recently acquired veteran guard Kemba Walker who they acquired in the Al Horford trade which they can package as assets in a trade. But will teams picking in the top like Detroit, Houston, Cleveland, Toronto, and Orlando realistically give up their chance of acquiring top-tier talents in a top-heavy 2021 NBA draft like Cade Cunningham, Evan Mobley, Jalen Green, Jalen Suggs, or Jonathan Kuminga? Also, will the Thunder stick with 6th overall pick? Will OKC pick 6’9 Florida wing Scottie Barnes who has been linked to them in recent post-lottery mock drafts? Will they go after a wing like hyper-athletic Keon Johnson or maybe Australian playmaking prodigy Josh Giddey? Or will they go after big men like 6’10 Turkish big Alperen Sengun, or maybe Texas rim-running center Kai Jones, Usman Garuba from Real Madrid. Or Isaiah Jackson from Kentucky? Overall, the Thunder have a lot of options. But can they build the right supporting cast around franchise star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, together with young pieces Lu Dort, Aleksej Pokusevski, Theo Maledon, and Darius Bazley? What will Sam Presti do?
