Why Mikel Arteta was angry with Martin Odegaard during Arsenal’s win over Leeds

Arsenal took on Leeds United this past weekend, aiming to move four points clear of Tottenham in the race for 4th spot.

And, thanks to an early brace from Eddie Nketiah and something of a collapse from Leeds United, this is exactly what Mikel Arteta’s team managed.

Leeds did pull one goal back midway through the second 45, but it was not enough to rescue a point for Jesse Marsch’s side, who have now slipped into the relegation zone as a result of the defeat.

Following the game, it has been explained why Mikel Arteta got angry with Martin Odegaard during the game.

As per football.london: “Arsenal were two goals and a man up but Arteta was in no mood to let anything slip. Noticing that Martin Odegaard wasn’t chasing back with the intensity he wanted the Spaniard furiously waved his fist at the Norwegian demand he sprint instead of job. Odegaard obliged and won the ball back to protect the Gunners from any chance of an unlikely Leeds comeback.”

Tottenham vs Arsenal

Arsenal must now turn their attentions towards Tottenham. The Gunners will face Tottenham this coming Thursday in the final north London derby of the season.

It is a huge tie for both teams, with a spot in next season’s Champions League very much on the line.

Arsenal head into the game occupying that coveted 4th spot and, thanks to Spurs’ draw with Liverpool on Saturday, Mikel Arteta and co. now boast a four-point lead over their bitter rivals.

As a result, if Arsenal win on Thursday, they will secure a Champions League place for the first time since 2017.
