Barcelona and Lyon, arguably the two finest teams in women’s European club football, face off in the final of the 2023/24 UEFA Women’s Champions League.

These teams met in this fixture back in 2022, when the French club emerged as 3-1 winners to deny Barca their second consecutive European title. However, the Catalans defeated Wolfsburg in last year’s showpiece to underline their credentials as the best club side in the world.

Lyon are the most successful team in the competition’s history and, like Barca, have dominated their domestic league in 2023/24. They overcame French rivals Paris Saint-Germain at the semifinal stage to secure their place in today’s final.

Barca won an engrossing semifinal against Emma Hayes’ Chelsea and, after a season in which they have only failed to win three matches in all competitions, they come into this game at San Mames as the favourites.

The Sporting News is following Barcelona vs. Lyon live, providing score updates, commentary and highlights as they happen.

Barcelona vs. Lyon live updates, highlights, and commentary

55 mins: Good play from Renard to deny Graham Hansen a run, but that move started with more good play in close quarters from Bonmati, who has started to come to life. The crowd sense a goal might be coming.

49 mins: RENARD AGAIN! The experienced defender fires over from around 12 yards out after a brilliant lay-off from Lindsey Horan. That was a centre-back’s finish. At the other end, Aitana Bonmati — who’s been quiet today — wins back possession from Horan, carries the ball some 40 yards, and wins a corner.

Second half: Barcelona 0-0 Lyon

Here we go! No changes to either side.

Halftime: Barcelona 0-0 Lyon

That’s that for the first 45. It’s been… tense.

44 mins: Just wide from Graham Hansen! Bronze’s off-ball run leaves Renard not knowing where to turn as Graham Hansen charges at her, drives past her into the box, but drills a low shot wide of the left-hand post.

40 mins: Renard’s header is too close to Cata Coll. Lyon continue to carry a threat, though.

33 mins: Lyon have just grown into the contest in these past few minutes. Keira Walsh is called on to stop Melchie Dumornay in her tracks, but some loose possession play sees Barca hand the ball back.

27 mins: Off the line! Lyon carelessly give the ball back to Barca on the edge of the box and Patricia Guijarro skips past a challenge to get to the byline. She cuts back and tries to squeeze a shot past Christiane Endler, who blocks with her leg, and the rebound is hooked away from the open goal.

22 mins: Barca are in control of possession but Lyon have quite comfortably kept them at arm’s length. There’s just a bit of frustration creeping in.

15 mins: Goodness me, Lyon nearly snatch the lead! Lucy Bronze, who earlier produced a sensational block in the six-yard box, glances on a corner that comes back off the underside of the crossbar. What a big moment early in this game.

9 mins: Brilliant play from Caroline Graham Hansen sets up Fridolina Rolfo for a half-volley at the far post, but she can’t control the shot. Barca have started well.

Kickoff: First half

We’re off and running in the glorious Bilbao sunshine.

10 mins before kickoff: As a reminder, this is expected to be the final match in charge for both coaches. Jonatan Giraldez is heading to NWSL side Washington Spirit, while Sonia Bompastor has been tipped to replace Emma Hayes as Chelsea head coach.

22 mins before kickoff: Arsenal star Beth Mead is here. “They’re incredible teams,” she tells DAZN. “I think it’s going to be a very close game, but I expect Barca to score more.” She’s going for a 3-1 win to the Catalans.

55 mins before kickoff: And here’s the Lyon XI that look to extend their historic record in this competition. They’ll be up against it but cup finals elsewhere today show the pre-match odds don’t always count for a lot!

1 hour before kickoff: Here are the teams. Alexia Putellas on the bench for Barcelona.

1 hour 30 mins before kickoff: Today’s game takes place at San Mames, the home of Athletic Club. A capacity crowd of more than 53,000 is anticipated for this match.

2 hours before kickoff: It’s the biggest game in women’s club football and we’ll be following every minute. Will Barcelona or Lyon stake their claim as the greatest club team in the world?
