The OKC Thunder have one of the best young cores in the entire NBA. After drafting Chet Holmgren 2nd overall in the 2022 NBA draft, the Oklahoma City Thunder already have Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Josh Giddey as the franchise’s main building blocks for the 2022-2023 NBA season and beyond. Even after Chet Holmgren’s was diagnosed with a lisfranc injury and will be out for the entire 2022-2023 NBA season, but OKC still have other pieces such as Darius Bazley, Aleksej Pokusevski, Tre Mann, Luguentz Dort, together with OKC’s new draft picks that were selected after Chet Holmgren, such as Ousmane Dieng, Jalen Williams, and Jaylin Williams. However, the OKC Thunder’s rebuild already has its star in Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. SGA averaged 24.5 points, 6 assists, and 5 rebounds last season and Shai can definitely be an NBA All-star next in 2022-2023. Josh Giddey also proved to be a phenomenal playmaker as a rookie while making the All-NBA rookie 2nd team. OKC General Manager Sam Presti may be playing the long game in building OKC’s future specially after Chet Holmgren’s lisfranc injury, in order to potentially draft generational unicorn French big man Victor Wembanyama in the 2023 NBA draft.
The OKC Thunder’s future is still to be determined. Chet Holmgren is being called a bust after playing at the Crawsover against LeBron James but OKC will need to find a way to win. Can Shai Gilgeous-Alexander carry Oklahoma City next season while the team balances Shai’s star talent and the development of their young guys. How much will OKC’s hiring of shooting coach Chip Engelland affect the Oklahoma CIty Thunder’s season? Will OKC tank again for Victor Wembanyama while waiting for Chet Holmgren or will Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Josh Giddey, Lu Dort, Tre Mann, Aleksej Pokusevski and the rest of the Thunder be able to build chemistry?
