BEIJING — Ilia Malinin landed a quadruple axel jump on his way to taking the short-program lead at the figure skating Grand Prix Finals on Thursday.
The United States skater, who was the first to land the four-and-a-half revolution jump in competition last year, also completed a quad lutz-triple toeloop combination and a triple axel to set a score of 106.90 points.
Two-time world champion Shoma Uno of Japan was close behind on 106.02 after landing two quads of his own, and his teammate Yuma Kagiyama was third with 103.72.
In the pairs, Minerva Fabienne Hase and Nikita Volodin of Germany continued their strong first season together, scoring 72.56 to take the lead in the short program. Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps of Canada were second on 71.22 and Sara Conti and Niccolo Macii were third for Italy with 70.30.
The pairs competition concludes with the free skate on Friday. The men’s free skate is on Saturday.
