Carlos Rodón, Carlos Martínez, and Jakob Junis are San Francisco Giants. When the lockout ended, the Giants’ pitching staff looked solid, but lacked a front-line arm to pair with Logan Webb. Rodón fills that void, as he has the upside of a true ace. With a starting five seemingly in place, it was still a group that looked particularly vulnerable to potential injuries. Enter Martínez and Junis, who represent a nice secondary layer of depth. This is how the Giants built out their staff last season, and it worked exceptionally well.

Now that the starting staff looks well equipped, with Webb, Rodón, Anthony DeSclafani, Alex Wood, and Alex Cobb leading the group (a couple more additions may be necessary), the Giants can turn their attention to the position-player segment of the market. Several very good option remain: Carlos Correa, Freddie Freeman, Trevor Story, Seiya Suzuki, Nick Castellanos, Kyle Schwarber, Kris Bryant, Tommy Pham, and Michael Conforto among them. Ben thinks there’s a pretty good chance at least one of those players is wearing an SF Giants uniform in 2022.

Finally, Ben looks at the Giants’ under-the-radar pickup of José Godoy off waivers. Godoy becomes the Giants’ third catcher on the 40-man roster, an important position to be in behind the unproven Joey Bart and veteran Curt Casali. If there’s an injury or if Bart struggles, the Giants will need to rely on their next-in-line catchers, an area in which they were lacking after everyone moved up on the depth chart following Buster Posey’s somewhat unexpected retirement.
