Any disappointment Sacramento Republic FC fans were feeling in the aftermath of a stinging USL Playoffs loss has quickly dissipated with news breaking that the team has new owners who will build a long-proposed new stadium at the Railyards.

Wilton Rancheria purchasing the team is a huge positive. It is a massive step forward for Sac Republic. However, expectations must be met with realism. And by that I mean MLS ain’t coming. If you look at the mitigating factors, all signs point to this being a USL-focused investment and new stadium project.

That’s because the new soccer stadium in Sacramento comes well short of the 18,000 capacity mark every MLS venues meets or surpasses. And while I’m sure expansion possibilities will be built into the project, the end goal doesn’t scream MLS-caliber facility.

On the other hand, if you compare the upcoming Sacramento Railyards Stadium to the USL’s most notable soccer-specific stadium, a lot of similarities appear.

Lynn Family Stadium, home to both Louisville City FC and Racing Louisville FC of the NWSL, is a really nice venue that seats 11,700 with a standing supporters section that drives that total to around 15,000. It could be scaled up in the future should and MLS invite be forthcoming.

That being said, life in the USL could be better for Sacramento Republic FC than existence in MLS. Just look at the San Jose Earthquakes for proof of that.
