Odermatt, Gut-Behrami top Alpine skiing earners

GENEVA — Swiss stars Marco Odermatt and Lara Gut-Behrami earned the most money on Alpine skiing’s World Cup circuit this season, although the two overall champions made less than the record $1 million totals of one year ago.

Odermatt again won 13 races to earn 810,000 Swiss francs ($903,000) in prize money, compared to his total of 941,200 Swiss francs (then $1,017,000) last year.

Gut-Behrami topped the women’s list with 574,200 Swiss francs ($640,000) in a season when she won a career-best eight races.

Both missed out on several opportunities to earn more as a series of speed races in the downhill and super-G disciplines were canceled because of weather issues — including in Beaver Creek, Colorado, and Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Germany.

In her injury-hit season, American standout Mikaela Shiffrin earned 557,000 Swiss francs ($621,000), one year after earning a World Cup-record 964,200 Swiss francs ($1.04 million). Shiffrin’s tally of nine race wins was five fewer than last season.

Italian all-rounder Federica Brignone also reached the half-million dollar mark, earning 484,000 Swiss francs.

Odermatt made more than twice as much as any other male skier. Cyprien Sarrazin of France was second on the prize-money list after making 365,500 Swiss francs ($407,000) in his breakout season in downhill.
