The talk all year around Michigan — on the playing field — has been dominance, with an asterisk. The asterisk being that the Wolverines have not faced a relevant team this year.

That changes on Saturday. The No. 3 Wolverines will head on the road to face their toughest test of the season, playing against No. 10 Penn State. And after last night’s decision by the Big Ten, they will have to do it without their head coach on the sideline, after the Big Ten said coach Jim Harbaugh could not be on the sideline for the remainder of the regular season.

Without Harbaugh coaching for Michigan, this will be a golden opportunity for Penn State to change the narrative surrounding the program. With Drew Allar, a dynamic defense and a talented duo of running backs, Penn State was supposed to be in the mix for the Big Ten East. However, the Nittany Lions fell to Ohio State earlier this season in a game many expected them to win, dropping James Franklin’s record to 3-16 against top-10 teams.

This game figures to be a low-scoring affair, with Michigan ranking No. 1 in the nation in scoring defense and first in total yardage allowed, while Penn State ranks second and third in those two categories, respectively. Michigan is fifth in scoring offense while Penn State is sixth, but the Nittany Lions also struggled against the Buckeyes in their toughest test of the season, netting their first third-down conversion on the final drive of the game and losing 20-12.

Michigan vs. Penn State live updates, results, highlights from Week 11 game

(All times Eastern)

Second quarter

12:55 p.m.: Allen’s second run of the game is a good one as he picks up nine yards going right up the middle, stopped just shy of the first-down marker.

12:54 p.m.: Penn State will start at its own 25 on a touchback.

12:50 p.m. Michigan scoring play: Penn State had one too many players on the first down play, and Michigan makes them pay the next play. Corum powers his way up the middle for the three-yard touchdown to give Michigan the lead with 11:56 to play in the half. Michigan 7, Penn State 3

12:49 p.m.: Penn State’s defense with a letdown, as a screen to Morgan this time on the right side gets him 19 yards for a first down and moves Michigan up to the Penn State 6. Now, it’s the Nittany Lions’ turn to hold the Wolverines in the red zone.

12:48 p.m.: Corum gets four yards, but on the second-down play, McCarthy’s wide receiver screen to Semaj Morgan is bottled up as he loses a pair of yards to bring up a third-and-8.

12:46 p.m.: There’s the big run for which Michigan has been waiting. Edwards cuts up the middle, escapes a tackle attempt and races up to the Penn State 26 for a pickup of 22 yards.

First quarter

12:42 p.m.: McCarthy keeps it himself on an option, and gets to the sideline, racing up for 13 yards to pick up the first down as the first quarter comes to an end.

12:41 p.m.: Penn State’s defense is doing its best to make Michigan one-dimensional today. Donovan Edwards picked up a yard, then is taken down by Adisa Isaac for a loss of the yard.

12:40 p.m.: McCarthy gets the Wolverines moving on offense right away, throwing a pass out to Cornelius Johnson on the sideline. Johnson turns up and gets a few extra yards for a gain of 13 and a first to the Michigan 38.

12:39 p.m.: Michigan will take the ball at its own 25 after a touchback.

12:35 p.m. Penn State scoring play: Allar tries a quick throw to Dante Cephas in the end zone, but the pass is broken up with 2:17 left in the first quarter. Michigan’s defense stands strong and gives up only a field goal the first time it allows an opposing time inside its own 10-yard line. Penn State 3, Michigan 0

12:34 p.m.: Impressive tackle by Barrett, who gets hold of Kaytron Allen trying to run outside to the left and brings him down for no gain. Allar then faces pressure, and airs the ball out over the end zone.

12:32 p.m.: Singleton is stuffed for no gain on second-and-1, but Allar appears to pick up the yardage for a first at the Michigan 3 on a quarterback sneak to move the chains. First-and-goal coming up.

12:30 p.m.: Singleton and Allar getting it done for Penn State. The running back powers up the middle for six, then Allar scrambles out of pressure in the pocket and scrambles for 11 yards to the Michigan 13. Singleton keeps it going by gaining nine to bring up a second-and-1 from the Michigan 4.

12:29 p.m.: Allar tries to connect with Lambert-Smith and misses, but Will Johnson is called for pass interference, getting there a step early to Lambert-Smith and drawing the 10-yard penalty. Penn State moves up to the Michigan 30.

12:28 p.m.: Now Singleton is getting it going. He shimmies his way through traffic for five yards, then powers his way up the middle again for six and a second first down for the Nittany Lions.

12:26 p.m.: Michigan defense keeps playing strong to start, bottling up Singleton for no gain as he tried to bounce outside to the left. But Allar gets a big completion for Penn State’s first first down of the game, finding Tyler Warren over the middle for a first. Warren adds a few more yards from there to pick up 19 in total up to the 50.

12:21 p.m.: McCarthy escapes a sack from Chop Robinson, and he tries to get a throw off to Loveland, but Carter slaps it away. Michigan goes three-and-out, and punts the ball to the Penn State 31.

12:20 p.m.: Near disaster for Michigan as Corum fumbled after he was blasted by Abdul Carter for no gain, but he was able to fall on the ball and recover his own fumble. McCarthy then connects with Colston Loveland on a quick pass to the right for seven yards.

12:16 p.m.: Michigan will start its drive at its own 30.

12:15 p.m.: Penn State goes a quick three-and-out, as Nicholas Singleton is brought down for a gain of just a yard, then after Drew Allar is forced to uncork a quick throw on second facing pressure from Michael Barrett, then misses Keandre Lambert-Smith on a slant.

12:10 p.m.: Another moderate gain on second down of three by Corum, but on third-and-9, McCarthy is brought down 10 yards after he tried to scramble left behind the line of scrimmage for a sack by Dani Dennis-Sutton. Michigan punts to the Penn State 26, where it’s fair caught by Daequan Hardy.

12:09 p.m.: Corum picks up four yards, but before the second-down play, Michigan is called for a false start to bring up another second-and-long.

12:07 p.m.: Blake Corum is stopped at the line of scrimmage to start the game, but J.J. McCarthy finds AJ Barner for 12 yards to the Michigan 37 to move the chains.

12:06 p.m.: Michigan takes the touchback to start at the 25.

12:03 p.m.: Penn State won the toss and deferred for the second half. Michigan will start the game on offense.

12:02 p.m.: Penn State has taken the field. Just about time for a pivotal Big Ten clash that will have major ramifications for the conference in 2023.

11:56 a.m.: Think former Michigan Heisman Trophy winner Charles Woodson is fired up over the suspension? He made it clear how frustrated he is by the whole saga during “Big Noon Kickoff.”

11:43 a.m.: Before the game, Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel issued a strong statement on the Big Ten’s suspension of Harbaugh. He said while the program has been disappointed to hear about the allegations, it also feels that the conference skipped due process of a complete investigation in suspending Harbaugh on Friday.

Manuel described the suspension as “completely unethical” and “an assault on the rights of everyone (especially in the Big Ten) to be judged by a fair and complete investigation.”

“All of the Head Coaches in the Big Ten (some who have been accused of actively participating in the trading of signals of opponents) and my Big Ten AD colleagues can rejoice today that someone was ‘held accountable,’ but they should be worried about the new standard of judgment (without complete investigation) that has been unleashed in this conference,” Manuel said.

11 a.m.: Harbaugh will not be coaching on Saturday against Penn State. Instead, his hearing will be held at 9 a.m. ET on Friday, which will determine whether his suspension will continue against Maryland on Saturday and Ohio State in the final week of the regular season, or if it will be on hold until further notice.

10 a.m.: ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported it’s unclear Jim Harbaugh will be granted a hearing in time to be able to coach against Penn State. With kickoff scheduled for noon ET, Thamel said ”the drama’s going to go right up ’till noon.”

The case is reportedly in the hands of Judge Carol Kunhke, a Michigan alumnus.

Harbaugh was not on the Michigan team bus with other coaches and players when it arrived at Beaver Stadium Saturday morning.

Michigan offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore will serve as acting head coach if Harbaugh is not available.
