Augusta National Golf Club is the only course that hosts a major every year. The top players in the world will descend on its immaculate grounds for the 2024 Masters beginning on Thursday, April 11. Three of the last four Masters have been decided by three strokes or more, with Jon Rahm winning by four last year, Scottie Scheffler winning by three in 2022 and Dustin Johnson winning by five in 2020. However, the Masters has been decided by a single shot or a playoff in 41 of the 87 times it’s been held.

Scheffler is coming off back-to-back wins in the Arnold Palmer Invitational and Players Championship and is the 5-1 favorite in the 2024 Masters odds. He’s followed by Rory McIlroy at 10-1 and Jon Rahm at 13-1 in the 2024 Masters futures. Brooks Koepka, Jordan Spieth, Will Zalatoris, and Viktor Hovland are all 21-1. Before locking in any 2024 Masters picks or golf predictions, you need to see what proven golf betting expert Patrick McDonald has to say, considering his recent track record.

McDonald joined CBS Sports as a golf writer in 2022 after stops at NBC Sports and RyderCup.com. Covering the sport from a broader perspective, McDonald still likes to dip his toes into the betting pools on a weekly basis between the PGA Tour, DP World Tour, and more. Featured weekly on the Early Wedge, he has given out numerous winners already in 2024, including Jake Knapp (50-1) at the Mexico Open.

Now, McDonald has focused his attention on the 2024 Masters field and has locked in his best bets, top sleepers and favorites to avoid. You can see only see them at SportsLine.

Top 2024 Masters expert picks

One stunning prediction from McDonald: He is high on Sam Burns, even though he is a 55-1 longshot. Burns is ranked No. 21 in the Official World Golf Ranking and 21st in the FedEx Cup standings after making the cut in seven PGA Tour events this season with four top-10 finishes.

The 27-year-old LSU product turned professional in 2017, earning his PGA Tour card in 2019 and finally broke through with his first win in 2021 at the Valspar Championship. Burns has piled up four more wins since then in just under three years and he’s also starting to find his footing in major championships. After missing the cut or withdrawing in four of his first seven majors, Burns has made the cut in five of his last seven starts in majors, including a career-best 29th-place finish at last year’s Masters. See who else to back here.

How to make 2024 Masters picks, bets

McDonald is also jumping on an underdog who’s had plenty of success at Augusta National but is still listed at more than 100-1 to win it all. You can only see his 2024 Masters picks at SportsLine.
