Manchester United could make formal approach for Kalvin Phillips this summer

Manchester United’s interest in Kalvin Phillips looks to be picking up ahead of the summer transfer window.

The Red Devils are in desperate need of a defensive midfielder, especially with Nemanja Matic set to depart the club for free this summer.

And given how impressive Phillips has looked for both Leeds and England over the last two seasons, he would no doubt make a great addition to United’s side.

The Athletic report that Manchester United have long been credited with an interest in Phillips, but the sense that a formal approach could finally happen this summer is gathering substance.

It is added that Manchester United have begun exploring, via intermediaries, the prospect of a transfer worth £50m. However, The Athletic go on to explain that there has been no direct contact between the two clubs, and none with Phillips either.

Would Phillips move to Manchester United?

Of course, there is the issue of Manchester United and Leeds’ historic rivalry and the fact, as confirmed by Patrick Bamford previously, all of Phillips’ family hate United:

“All his family hate (Manchester) United,” Bamford said. “They’re probably telling him, ‘Make sure you tell the lads how big and crucial this game is. One of them where the rest of the season, while being important, this game is the main focus’.”

However, should Phillips indeed make the switch to Old Trafford, he would not be the first player to line out for his boyhood club’s bitter rivals.

Jamie Carragher grew up an Everton fan whilst Harry Kane and Matt Doherty of Tottenham are known to have supported Arsenal in the past.
