MONTREAL — It was ‘four’ all around for the Toronto Argonauts on Friday.

Quarterback Chad Kelly scored four touchdowns to move the Argos to 4-0 for the first time in 40 years after beating the Montreal Alouettes 35-27 on Friday.

As the Als refused to go down in the second quarter by tying the game multiple times in the second half, Toronto’s pivot found a way to get a lead they would not let go by connecting deep with receiver David Ungerer III for the final score of the game.

It wasn’t all perfect for the Argos, but it was just enough to make it four in a row.

“We shot ourselves in the foot too many times,” said the quarterback to TSN after the game. “But it was a good team effort today, just have to clean it up and get better.”

Kelly started the game with a scoring drive that ended with him rushing for a major, but the Argos’ offence stalled for the rest of the first half before exploding for 28-second half points.

Amongst those were three touchdown passes by the pivot, who also threw an ill-advised interception that he wish he could have back.

“I had that one pick that was stupid. Never throw across your body like that.”

That ended up being just a blip in an otherwise outstanding performance by Toronto’s quarterback as he continues to assert himself in his first year as the starter.

Kelly completed 21 of 25 passes for 351 yards, three touchdowns and a pick, while adding another score on the ground. A good leader knows that it’s the talent around him that help performances like that happen, giving praise to teammates all around.

“He just always comes to play,” said Kelly about Ungerer catching the game-winning touchdown.

The signal-caller also gave a shout out to his offensive line for not allowing any sacks against a stingy Montreal defence as Toronto continues to find different ways to win in 2023.

Kelly and the Argos will try to match the franchise’s best start of the modern era set in 1960 next week as they stay on the road to take on the Tiger-Cats in Hamilton on Friday, July 21.
