The Bengals have gotten off to a putrid start in the 2022 NFL season. Last season’s AFC representative in the Super Bowl dropped a pair of winnable games in the opening two weeks to the Steelers and Cowboys. That has has prompted Cincy fans to sound the alarm on social media.

The concern hasn’t penetrated the Bengals’ locker room, though. At least that’s what Joe Burrow says. In fact, Cincinnati’s star signal-caller hasn’t seen any of the criticism on socials.

He said Wednesday that he had previously deleted Twitter and Instagram off his phone. To borrow a phrase from fellow Ohio icon LeBron James, it’s “zero dark thirty” time for Joe Cool.

Burrow said he hasn’t had socials on his phone for “a while.” It seems he had to step away from Twitter and Instagram, which are known to turn into cesspools.

Burrow isn’t the first athlete to delete social media off his phone, and he certainly won’t be the last. A list of other notable athletes who have pressed that little ‘X’ on their touch screens to block out social media negativity:

Athletes to delete social media

For all its positive attributes, social media can be the bane of those who are n the spotlight. It’s no surprise that athletes from the gridiron to the hardwood have put their accounts on pause to stay focused.

James and Burrow are two of the more famous examples, but Jets quarterback Zach Wilson, Panthers QB Baker Mayfield, Titans left tackle Taylor Lewan and Steelers edge rusher TJ Watt have put their social media on hiatus during their careers.

Others, like the Cardinals QB Kyler Murray and 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel, scrubbed their respective feeds in recent months during contract negotiations.

Wilson says it comes with being a highly publicized athlete.

“I’d say that’s pretty common with a lot of athletes,” he said.
