Two years after the ASA STARS National Tour almost raced at Slinger Speedway, the super late model series will try again in 2025.
The popular quarter-mile north of Milwaukee will replace the Milwaukee Mile on the schedule on Father’s Day, but keep a Wisconsin weekend on the schedule with Slinger following a Friday night race at Madison International Speedway.
The 12-race schedule was announced Friday afternoon, hours after series promoter Bob Sargent confirmed the Slinger addition to the Journal Sentinel.
The ASA STARS National Tour initially had the Slinger Nationals on the schedule for its inaugural 2023 season. That date was scrapped, though, over an incompatibility in rules that would have handicapped some local and regional racers who are the backbone of the event that dates to 1980.
Before ASA STARS raced at the Mile on Father’s Day, Sargent promoted an ASA Midwest Tour race at the track on the grounds of State Fair Park. The 2019 Midwest Tour race marked the return of any kind of racing on the oval after four years.
Sargent’s relationship with State Fair Park soured over a date conflict between a new IndyCar event and his existing NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race.
After IndyCar usurped the 2025 date for which Sargent said he was contracted with NASCAR – the weekend before Labor Day – Sargent left considerable doubt that he would promote other races at the Mile next year.
Slinger also has had a big race on Father’s Day, which presented prominent state drivers and fans with a difficult choice.
Whether ASA STARS will hold tight to its rules or make accommodations that could help attract local teams and drivers has yet to be announced.
