It’s no secret that Notre Dame is a program that typically has been built on defense in recent years. That certainly is reflected in [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] being the program’s coach. Still, the fact is the Irish do have an elite defense, and that’s reflected by that unit ranking fifth among Football Bowl Subdivision programs in total yardage given up in 2023 (276.3 a game).

That defense is expected to be no less effective in 2024. Big Game Boomer, who makes a lot of college football lists for social media reflects this in his rankings for the sports top defenses entering the season. The Irish come in at third:

It’s not coincidental that the two programs ahead of the Irish, Michigan and Ohio State, both ranked ahead of the Irish in total defense in 2023. In short, there should be much change to college football from last season in this regard. So it will be up to [autotag]Al Golden[/autotag] to keep those expectations to form.
