The Internationals will be major underdogs, but the event will go on this week when they face the United States in the 2022 Presidents Cup in Charlotte, N.C. Defections to LIV Golf have left the International squad without top players Cameron Smith and Joaquin Niemann, and the Americans have most of the world’s top-ranked golfers. Team USA also has won 11 of the 13 previous editions of the biennial event, with the 2003 tournament ending in a tie and the Internationals winning in 1998. The most recent Presidents Cup was played at Royal Melbourne in 2019, and the United States trailed 10-8 entering Sunday Singles. Tiger Woods cruised past Abraham Ancer in the opening match, and Team USA went on to claim eight of the 12 available points to win 16-14 and retain the trophy. No. 1 Scottie Scheffler leads a contingent of Americans that includes nine players in the world’s top 15. No. 16 Hideki Matsuyama of Japan and South Koreans Sungjae Im (19th) and Joo-hyung Kim (20th) are the top players for the Internationals.

Caesars Sportsbook lists Team USA as the -750 favorite in the latest 2022 President Cup odds, with the Internationals a +700 underdog and a tie priced at +1800. Caesars also offers plays on top scorers and other prop bets. Six Americans are shorter than 10-1 to be the top combined scorer, led by Scheffler and Xander Schauffele at 15-2, while Matsuyama and Im are priced at 20-1. Before you lock in any 2022 Presidents Cup picks, be sure you check out the expert predictions and best bets from SportsLine golf insider Patrick McDonald.

After spending time at FanSided and NBC Sports EDGE, McDonald joined CBS Sports as a golf writer in the spring of 2022. Now covering the sport from a broader perspective, McDonald still likes to dip his toes into the betting pools on a weekly basis on the PGA Tour.

He takes a measured approach to his outright selections and finished the 2021-22 season up 42 units on those plays, having hit Cameron Smith (22-1) at the Tournament of Champions, Hudson Swafford (250-1) at The American Express, Joaquin Niemann (70-1) at the Genesis Invitational and Justin Thomas (66-1) live at the PGA Championship.

Now, McDonald has studied the 2022 Presidents Cup field and is locking in his best bets, top sleepers and favorites to avoid. You can only see his Presidents Cup picks at SportsLine

Top 2022 Presidents Cup expert picks

In one stunning prediction, McDonald is fading Scheffler, saying that the American star could even be left watching some if he starts slowly. The Masters champ is a Presidents Cup rookie, and Team USA has experienced players like Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth who should be the leaders. Scheffler had a remarkable season, with his win at Augusta one of four, and 10 finishes in the top five. Still, he struggled a bit at the end, especially with his putter, and his collapse at the Tour Championship could linger. He missed two cuts in his final five outings.

On the flip side, McDonald is eager to see how Spieth performs after a bit of a roller-coaster season. The 29-year-old missed out on the 2019 Presidents Cup amid a prolonged slump, but he has played every other one since his 2013 rookie season. He is 8-5-1 in his 14 matches and also has been on two winning Ryder Cup teams. He has two victories among his five top-three finishes over the past two seasons, so his slump is history. He wrapped up his 2021-22 season by going 10 under (without starting strokes) at the Tour Championship, shooting 65 on Sunday.  You can see the rest of McDonald’s best bets here.
