The Mets offense was kept in check and Tylor Megill allowed three home runs as New York fell to the Atlanta Braves, 4-0 on Saturday evening at Citi Field.

This is the eighth time the Mets (55-49) have been shut out this season. The loss snapped the Mets’ five-game winning streak and allowed the Braves to regain the top NL Wild Card spot.

Here are the takeaways…

-Megill returned to the mound for the Mets for the first time since June and promptly retired the first 11 batters he faced, as everyone predicted, before Marcell Ozuna and Matt Olson took the big righty deep in the fourth inning for the first runs of the game.

It was never as good as those first few innings for Megill who would allow an RBI single to Orlando Arcia and a solo shot to Eddie Rosario.

Megill went 6+ innings (95 pitches/65 strikes) giving up four runs on five hits, two walks and striking out four batters.

-On the other end, the Mets lineup just couldn’t figure out rookie Spencer Schwellenbach. the young right-hander pitched seven shutout innings, allowing just two hits and striking out 11 batters.

The Mets picked up just four hits, two hits were doubles from Jeff McNeil and Pete Alonso, the last being in the fourth inning, and two singles in the ninth, one from Luis Torrens and the other from Brandon Nimmo.

DJ Stewart finished 0-for-3 with a strikeout. With rumors and reports that the Mets are looking for another left-handed bat, this could be one of Stewart’s last starts.

-Newly-acquired reliever Ryne Stanek was activated Saturday but did not come into the game. The tandem of Danny Young (2 IP) and Alex Young (1 IP) pitched three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and combining for seven strikeouts in relief of Megill.

Game MVP: Spencer Schwellenbach

The Mets offense is one of the most formidable and deep lineups in the league but the rookie kept them confounded all night.

It was Schwellenbach’s best start of his career.
