Tammy Abraham has completed his $47 million move from Chelsea to Roma, signing a five year contract with the Giallorossi.
The sizeable fee makes Abraham the second most expensive signing in their history behind Czech forward Patrik Schick and could increase subject to a number of clauses related to the performance both of the player himself and the club. However Roma could yet profit significantly on the player should Chelsea ever choose to activate the $94 million buyback clause they agreed with the Serie A giants, which will become active in the summer of 2023.

Abraham had fallen down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge following the appointment of Thomas Tuchel, and the club record signing of Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan meant that he would find playing time even harder to come by. His move to the Eternal City completes a transfer triangle that saw Edin Dzeko leave Roma for Inter as Lukaku’s replacement.
“You can sense when a club really wants you – and Roma made their interest clear immediately,” said Abraham, who will be working under former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho at the Stadio Olimpico. “Roma is a club that deserves to be fighting for titles and trophies. I’ve had the experience of winning major trophies and I want to be in those competitions again – so I want to help this team to achieve that and get to the level where Roma should be.
“It’s a massive honor to be the No. 9 at this club and I just can’t wait to get started and to help the team.”
Though Abraham struggled to win the trust of Tuchel his record at boyhood club Chelsea was impressive indeed. In 87 top flight appearances for the Blues he scored 26 goals, averaging 0.47 per 90 minutes as he battled the likes of Olivier Giroud, Kai Havertz and Timo Werner for minutes. His non penalty expected goals per 90 over the past three seasons (0.63) was the second highest of regular starters in the Premier League.
“Despite still being very young, with a huge amount of potential to keep improving, Tammy has already played more than 200 games in his career and scored over 100 goals – and won a number of major trophies too,” said Roma general manager. Tiago Pinto. “Choosing to leave the Premier League, and the club he grew up at, demonstrates very clearly just how much he believes in this opportunity to develop his own game and show what he can do at Roma.
“Bringing in players that have such a hunger and desire to play for our club is hugely important in helping to build the identity and sense of belonging that is a fundamental part of our overall vision for this team.”
