CHICAGO — This series against the Dodgers was billed as a kind of litmus test for a Cubs team trying to find its rhythm after a slow start to the season. On Wednesday night, Chicago traded blows with the reigning World Series champions, emerging with a sweep of the three-game set at Wrigley Field.
One day after pulling off a doubleheader sweep, the Cubs eked out a 6-5 win over L.A. in 11 innings. The decisive blow came from Anthony Rizzo, who sent a single through the left side of the infield to set off an on-field mob scene for the second game in a row.
Rizzo raised his left arm in the air as the baseball reached the outfield grass, scoring Matt Duffy and sending their teammates pouring out of the dugout. Rizzo sprinted through the crowd of players and quickly made his way to the dugout, doing what he could to avoid a celebratory bruising.
That game-winning moment came after Rizzo did not step on first on a would-be double play in the top of the 11th. On a grounder to first from Matt Beaty, Rizzo only managed to get an out at second with a throw to shortstop Javier Báez. That led to Max Muncy scoring from third to push the Cubs behind, 5-4.
In the home half of the 11th, Dodgers lefty Garrett Cleavinger struck out Jason Heyward and David Bote, but then Duffy delivered a game-tying single to center to score Willson Contreras (the automatic runner). After Tony Wolters followed with a walk, Rizzo delivered his heroics to seal the sweep.
