San Jose Earthquakes have announced the arrival of 31-year-old free agent Josef Martinez on Monday.

The history-making attacker joins the club following his stint with CF Montréal and signed a one-year contract with a club option for 2026.

Martínez, who is the fastest player in MLS history to score 100 goals, brings with him heaps of experience. He previously played for Inter Miami and Atlanta United, alongside the Canadian club.

Overall, he has registered 116 goals and 20 assists in 184 career MLS regular-season appearances. Such figures will help San Jose improve from a bottom-of-the-table finish last season.

“Josef Martinez is an accomplished goalscorer in our league and is clearly an excellent addition to our team,” said Earthquakes Sporting Director and Head Coach Bruce Arena. “We are looking forward to his contributions to our attack.”

“I’m happy to be here, to be part of this group and the San Jose Earthquakes,” said Martinez. “I’m very excited for the new year and hope we can make history here.”

With the signing, San Jose “have two of the top seven players in MLS history in goals scored per 90 minutes” (Martínez, third [0.783] and Cristian “Chicho” Arango, seventh [0.702]).
