Aristella with jockey Patrick Husbands heads to the winner’s circle after the Princess Elizabeth Stakes.

Date: 11/30/2024

With just 2 weeks remaining in the Woodbine Thoroughbred season, there are few stakes opportunities left as many of the top stables have begun to ship south for the winter. On Saturday the major 2-year-old preps for next year’s Woodbine Oaks and King’s Plate were conducted after sunset, under overcast skies with light flurries and a post time temperature of -2 C (29 F) but wind chills of -8 C (18 F). The $250,000 Princess Elizabeth Stakes featured Canadian-foaled 2-year-old fillies going 1 1/16 miles on Tapeta. After morning line longshot Proud Mischief scratched, a field of 11 went to post with Catch a Glimpse Stakes winner Shifty sent off as the 4-5 favorite after finishing third against males in the Grey Stakes (G3). In to challenge her included 9-2 second choice Ready for Candy, third in the Mazarine (G3) last out, and 6-1 third choice Brengungirl, undefeated in 2 starts including the South Ocean Stakes.

Aristella takes the lead in the stretch.

31-1 Regal Moment was quickest away under Fraser Aebly through an opening quarter in 26.40 before Austin Adams sent 100-1 longest shot Orient Beach to the front on the clubhouse turn through a half in 52.92 and 3/4 in 1:17.40, pressed by Ready for Candy and stalked by Regal Moment and 19-2 fourth choice Aristella. Turning for home Ready for Candy gained a short lead through 1 mile in 1:42.17, but Aristella, confidently ridden by Patrick Husbands, came out 4 wide into the lane and rallied to win by 1/2 a length in 1:48.78. It was another 1 1/2 lengths back to 43-1 Crystal Visions third, and a head more to late-running favorite Shifty fourth.

Left: Aristella in the winner’s circle. Winning jockey Patrick Husbands said, “I wanted to save some ground, but by the seven-eighths pole, I saw the guys in trouble, so I had to go back out to the outside. So, I let the race go and let my horse get comfortable. And then by the quarter-pole, she was just taking me there, and it was only a matter of how far she’s [going to] win. So, she won a big race.”

Right: Aristella in the post parade. Winning trainer Rachel Halden said, “She was actually the only filly in the whole race that has won two turns already. So, I mean, that was encouraging. And, you know, everybody else was coming off sprints. She was doing well. The last race, it actually was quite a solid effort in a very tough graded stakes. We felt very good about everything coming into it today. The plan is to (send her) to WinStar Farm for the winter. She’ll get a little bit of a break and start back up in the new year. I’m looking forward to next summer.”

Left: Second place finisher Ready for Candy in the post parade. The Mike De Paulo trainee improved her record to 0 wins, 3 seconds, and 2 thirds in 7 starts, earning $107,171 for owner Zilli Racing Stables.

Notorious Gangster wins the Coronation Futurity.

The $250,000 Coronation Futurity over 1 1/8 miles on Tapeta, is the premier race for Canadian-foaled 2-year-olds, and usually influences voting for the Sovereign Awards in the 2-year-old male category as well as determines the early favorite for next year’s King’s Plate and Canadian Triple Crown, playing a similar role as the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) does for the Kentucky Derby. After Watsonville Red scratched, a field of 10 went to post with Bull Page Stakes winner Dewolf sent off as the 9-5 favorite off his second place finish in the Grey Stakes (G3). In to challenge him included 2-1 second choice Ashley’s Archer, winner of the Cup and Saucer Stakes, and 4-1 third choice Forty N Five off his disappointing 7th place finish in the Summer Stakes (G1).

Jockey Luis Contreras sent Forty N Five to the lead first time by and he set fractions of 24.59, 49.32, and 1:13.48 while pressed by Ashley’s Archer and stalked by 29-1 Conacher. Turning for home Forty N Five tired badly as favorite Dewolf, 6th early, gained a short lead through 1 mile in 1:39.03. 10-1 Notorious Gangster, 5th early under Fraser Aebly, came out 4 wide into the lane and rallied by Dewolf at the 1/16 pole to win by 2 lengths in 1:52.70. It was a neck back to Ashley’s Archer third.

Winning jockey Fraser Aebly said, “I wasn’t sure we were going to hit the outside coming to the top of the lane, and the inside was opening up, and he wasn’t quite ready for it, he liked the outside. And, you know, we got a nice trip out, and when I let him run, he was all racehorse.”

Right: The trophy presentation for the Coronation Futurity. Aebly, who has been aboard for all 4 starts, added, “He’s improved a ton. Every time I get on this horse, he’s getting better and better and better. Josie (Carroll, trainer) and I figured that he’d want to go two turns, since his first couple starts, and he’s relaxed really nice for me.”
