A fresh update on the future of Raheem Sterling has emerged recently.
Raheem Sterling & Man City
Sterling has of course been a mainstay in Manchester City’s attack for many years now.
In 292 outings for the Sky Blues, the attacker has managed to rack up 114 goals and 87 assists – playing a key role in the club’s recent dominance of the English top-flight.
However, recent months have seen Pep Guardiola limit Sterling’s game-time, both in the league and in Europe.
The former Liverpool man featured for just two minutes over two legs as City saw off Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League’s quarter-finals, before then being left on the bench for the first of two semi-final meetings with PSG as well.
Granted, Sterling did start in the CL final. But his subpar display is unlikely to have won over Pep Guardiola.
And though Sterling was featuring fairly heavily at the back end of the PL season, it was quite clear City were often starting a second-rate eleven in these games, with Phil Foden now seemingly Guardiola’s preferred option on the left for the important games.
Guardiola’s Sterling stance
After seemingly falling down the pecking order at Man City, reports began to emerge that Sterling could perhaps be on the move this summer.
It was even claimed that Arsenal, where Pep Guardiola’s former assistant Mikel Arteta is now at the helm, were leading the race for Sterling.
So, when transfer expert Fabrizio Romano was speaking to The Arsenal Lounge recently, it was not surprising to see Sterling’s name brought up.
Romano though, played down the Arsenal rumours somewhat, stating that Pep Guardiola is still currently in the position of wanting to keep Sterling.
However, he did add that Man City need to negotiate a new contract for Sterling, who has just over two years left on his current deal.
And if they decide not to extend his contract, then they may look to sell him this summer instead:
“They need to negotiate about the contract. They are talking, not an official discussion with [Raheem] Sterling, but they are talking with people close to the player. They still have no agreement.”
“They need to decide about extending his contract, or maybe selling him this summer. At the moment, Pep Guardiola is still in the position of wanting to keep Raheem Sterling.
“But he’s out of contract in two years, so they need to decide this summer if they want to extend his contract or not.”
