The performances of the first-round rookie quarterbacks, including Chicago’s Caleb Williams, Washington’s Jayden Daniels, New England‘s Drake Maye, Minnesota‘s J.J. McCarthy, Atlanta‘s Michael Penix Jr., and Denver‘s Bo Nix will be watched closely.

In terms of contract situations to monitor, Packers QB Jordan Love struck a record deal with the Packers and Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa got a hefty new contract a few days into camp, but Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and 49ers receiver Brandon Aiyuk could be in line for new deals these next few weeks — or lingering drama if they don’t get them.

As always, there are buzzy QB competitions in store as well, highlighted by Russell Wilson vs. Justin Fields in Pittsburgh. Another to keep an eye on is Gardner Minshew vs. Aidan O’Connell in Las Vegas. Meanwhile, Maye, Nix, McCarthy and Penix will all try to push presumed starters as much as possible in their camps, and here’s a wild card: Daniel Jones vs. Drew Lock with the Giants.

Autry reportedly violated the NFL’s performance-enhancing drug policy.

Big loss for the Texans in what’s shaping up to be a promising season.

  • This has been NFL’s summer of paying big money for QBs with incomplete grades

Quarterback contracts are going to be discussed every year as players sign new deals and resolve contract disputes with their teams. This summer saw a slew of quarterbacks sign market-rate extensions, but where this year differed from previous years, to a degree, is that a few of these quarterbacks that signed deals largely have incomplete résumés.

Still, the contracts of Jordan Love, Tua Tagovailoa and Trevor Lawrence have some people scratching their heads.

Still, he adds, there are always new routes and concepts that could use work.

  • Latest on Ja’Marr Chase, from Bengals camp

As the Bengals await wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase’s return to practice, head coach Zac Taylor says his brother is “killing me for my plan, he wants to know my plan.”

    From Frank Schwab:

“The fact that the 49ers could practically run it back with the same roster after a Super Bowl appearance is rare. They were able to do that because Purdy’s contract is still one of Mr. Irrelevant. His cap hit this season is a little more than $1 million. That will change soon, assuming the 49ers extend him. For now, it keeps the 49ers’ window wide open.”

The former Alabama player appeared in all 17 games and had 65 tackles with 8.5 sacks and 13 tackles for loss. The extension he signed with the team included over $40 million in guaranteed money.

  • Caleb Williams shows why Bears drafted him No. 1 overall

LAKE FOREST, Ill. — July practices are the time to learn each other’s tendencies and trying new things.

But as Caleb Williams found wide receiver Tyler Scott for yet another deep touchdown in training camp, members of the coaching staff thought to themselves: Look at his ability to extend the play. Look at his grasp of the field.

“He had that natural feeling, that natural spatial awareness [that], ‘Hey, there’s a void that shouldn’t have been there based on what the coverage structure might have played out as, but it played out a little different,” offensive coordinator Shane Waldron said. “He’s starting to feel the tight-window throws that are a part of the NFL.

“He’s able to find that for a big play.”

  • Dolphins appear to confirm new Tua deal

  • Tua finally gets his big payday from the Dolphins

The initial numbers for Tua Tagovailoa put him at $53.1 million per year, which makes him the third-highest paid QB in the NFL in annual value, behind Joe Burrow and Trevor Lawrence (both at $55M/year).

Tua’s deal reportedly has $167 million in guarantees.

The 5th-year QB led the NFL with 4,624 passing yards last season along with a career-high 29 touchdown passes and 14 interceptions. He’d been a limited participant in training camp practices thus far, but that will surely change now that he has a fresh contract secured.

Vikings rookie linebacker Dallas Turner played two seasons with Khyree Jackson at Alabama before reuniting as part of Minnesota’s 2024 draft class.

“I talk to him all the time … and get the chills every single time I talk to him,” Turner said Thursday. “So, I know he’s watching over me.”

“As long as I’m alive,” Turner added, “I’ll rep his name.”

Jackson, the Vikings’ fourth-round pick out of Oregon, was one of three people killed in an automobile accident in Maryland earlier this month. Also dying in the crash were Isaiah Hazel, who played at Maryland and UNC Charlotte, and Anthony “AJ” Lytton, who played his college ball at Florida State and Penn State.

Vikings players will honor Jackson this season with “KJ” decals worn on their helmets. Additionally, coaches and staff will wear pins matching the design of the decal.

The Vikings announced that they will pay Jackson’s full signing bonus to his family. According to Spotrac, Jackson would have been paid a $827,148 bonus as part of his contract. For the 2024 season, he was set to receive $206,787.
