New Orleans Saints Co-Defensive Coordinator Possibility: Can It Work?

New continues to circulate around the New Orleans Saints potentially going with both Kris Richard and Ryan Nielsen as co-defensive coordinators. What would the division of labor be not just between the two of them, but with Dennis Allen calling plays as well? How the the player personnel helps to make a difference and why the Saints should go about this with extreme caution.

The Minnesota Vikings tried to get this done in 2020 and 2021 with Andre Patterson and Adam Zimmer and things didn’t go to plan even with Mike Zimmer, a defensive genius, calling the plays. How the Saints could avoid this kind of production comes down to who is already in the building, the players, and the continuity and trust throughout the organization.

Should the Saints look to draft a quarterback in the first round? Why Malik Willis should be on the Saints radar at 18, but beyond that, it’s all about who “the guy” could be. Outside of that, no need to rush into a quarterback in the first round. Kenny Pickett, Matt Corral, Sam Howell, Desmond Ridder and others all have their ups and downs. But any earlier than the back half of the first round feels like a reach in this year’s NFL draft.
