RICHMOND — Will there be two NASCAR weekends at Richmond Raceway next year? A shocking NASCAR announcement today got me racing to find the answer to that question.

A media release at nascar.com by Zack Albert stated, “NASCAR officials announced Tuesday that the Cup Series will race in Mexico next season, adding the first international points event in the division’s modern history to the 2025 schedule. The historic race is scheduled for Sunday, June 15, at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City, the nation’s capital.

“The Mexico City track — which has road course and oval configurations — has hosted various series since its construction in 1959. The historic road course is 2.674 miles long, boasts 17 turns and sits at an elevation of 7,342 feet. The track was named in honor of racing brothers Ricardo Rodríguez and Pedro Rodríguez. The circuit was remodeled in 2015 and has hosted eight Formula 1 Grand Prix’s since then, becoming one of the most popular international racing circuits in the world.”

So, what does this all mean for NASCAR fans who sit in the stands and tailgate at Richmond Raceway?

Matt Kiewiet reported in the Bristol Herald Courier, “With the addition of a Cup Series — NASCAR’s premier series — race in Mexico City in 2025, that means one stop on the schedule had to go.

“Richmond will lose its springtime race — traditionally held in the spring — at the North Side short track. The second race — traditionally held in the summer— remains on NASCAR’s 2025 schedule, which will be officially released later this week.”

This afternoon, I reached out to Matt Humphrey, NACAR’s senior director of track communications, to verify how many NASCAR race weekends will take place in 2025 at the Richmond Raceway.

“We can confirm that Richmond will only have one NASCAR weekend next year, and it will be in the summer,” Humphrey said. “We’ll have some exciting news to share about that later this week.”

At this time, Richmond Raceway’s website has not been updated. It states, “NASCAR returns to Richmond Raceway in 2025! Your crew’s seats, camping, and other experiences are available to renew for the 2025 Spring NASCAR weekend and the full 2025 season now.”

Richmond Raceway has not responded or commented about this development.

According to frcs.pro, “The first NASCAR Cup Series race at Richmond Raceway was held on April 19, 1953, and won by NASCAR Hall of Famer Lee Petty in a Petty Enterprises Dodge with an average speed of 45.535 mph.”

Since 1958, Richmond Raceway has hosted two races per season except one year due to COVID. I’ve only been to two NASCAR races in Richmond, one years ago and the Cook Out 400 this month. The first race I attended in the 90s was extremely crowded, but on August 11, there were many vacant seats. However, NASCAR fans still flocked to Richmond to experience the thrill.

NASCAR’s official 2025 full schedule has not yet been released. Visit nascar.com for more information.
