Marcus Stroman responds to ‘racist undertones’ in comment by Diamondbacks analyst Bob Brenly

After Bally Sports Arizona analyst Bob Brenly made comments about Mets’ starting pitcher Marcus Stroman’s du-rag, the New York right-hander took to Twitter to respond. 

While Stroman was pitching on Tuesday against the Diamondbacks, Brenly, a former manager who won a World Series with Arizona, made a remark about his head covering that many, including Stroman, called racist. 

“Pretty sure that’s the same du-rag that Tom Seaver used to wear when he pitched for the Mets,” Brenly, who is white, said. 

Stroman, who is Black, responded on Twitter, retweeting several responses to the video that called the comments racist. 

“Onward and upward…through all adversity and racist undertones. The climb continues through all,” Stroman tweeted.

Neither Brenly, Bally Sports or the Diamondbacks have responded to the comments. 

Brenly has made comments before that have elicited public backlash. In 2019, Brenly made a statement about the neckwear of Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr., saying, “it might be easier to run the bases if he didn’t have that bike chain around his neck. Weighing him down, doesn’t it?”

Stroman shared a graphic of him wearing headphones and standing in front of a number of comments with messages saying “not everything is racism” and “How is this racism,” with a response saying, “Those who talk down on you are already beneath you.”

Stroman also tweeted that du-rags will soon be available for sale through his HDMH Apparel brand.
