In just two seasons, Dallas Mavericks young superstar Luka Doncic has become a global phenomenon. A former MVP in Europe and a star player for the Real Madrid Basketball Club in Spain, he was already a big teenager sensation overseas. But after a very impressive second season in which Doncic averaged 29 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists and had an impressive NBA playoffs debut, he’s quickly become a fan favorite not only in Dallas, but around the world.

Today, we will take a look at the time Luka Doncic was recklessly attacked by the Minnesota Lynx. But before we do, make sure to hit that like button and subscribe to the channel if you haven’t already!

This whole Luka Doncic beef with the WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx franchise started in early September 2019. By this point, Luka Doncic was getting ready to start his second season in the NBA as a member of the Mavericks and was the reigning Rookie of the Year. It was at this same time that the WNBA was wrapping up the last week of their 2019 regular season, and fellow Dallas rookie star Arike Ogunbowale was having an amazing first season in her WNBA career.

For their part, the Minnesota Lynx had a shining rookie player of their own, with Napheesa Collier being the other favorite for the 2019 WNBA Rookie of the Year award. Collier averaged 13 points, seven rebounds, and three assists while shooting 36.1% from three, and she was in a two-woman race with Ogunbowale for Rookie of the Year honors.

In support of Ogunbowale, the Dallas Wings uploaded a video to their official Twitter account where Luka Doncic posed with her jersey and offered some words of encouragement for the fellow Dallas rookie star. “What’s up, Arike? I know you’re having a great season, so just keep on pushing. I know you’re going to be the Rookie of the Year, so the best of luck to you,” said Doncic in the six-second clip.

Objectively, this was a great way to promote the WNBA and their players, as well as their upcoming playoffs. The Minnesota Lynx, however, took exception to Doncic’s comments and decided to answer back by quoting the Wings’ original tweet.

“***says a guy who hasn’t been to a WNBA game all season but got sent a jersey and recorded a scripted video***” said the hostile response about Doncic.

For one, the claim that Luka had never been to a WNBA game was apparently not true, as he reportedly had attended a Dallas Wings game before, though there are no pictures or evidence whatsoever. Even the Wings’ Twitter account responded to the Lynx’s tweet saying, “That’s actually false, but good try.”

That’s a sentiment echoed by reporter Brice Paterik, who quoted the Lynx’s tweet saying, “Trashing NBA players for supporting the WNBA is not a great look for the league. Also, I’m pretty sure Luka has been to a Wings game.” The Lynx responded to that tweet by quoting it and saying, “No trashing, just facts. We have plenty of NBA players (and coaches) at out games, bruh…” before adding pictures of players like Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins at Lynx games.

Recently, there has been a lot of discussion with WNBA players pushing for higher salaries. As you might know, and as it also happens in the NBA, each Players Association negotiates with the rest of the associations and with the league office the percentage of the league’s earnings that will be paid to players as salaries in the Current Bargaining Agreement, commonly known as the CBA.

As it currently stands, NBA players receive roughly 50% of the league earnings in salaries, a percentage that helps determine each season’s salary cap. In the WNBA’s case, its CBA doesn’t specify a particular revenue percentage players will take each season, with the general consensus being the percentage varies depending on how well the league does financially in each particular season.

Collier chimed in on Twitter as well, quoting the original Doncic video and saying, “I’ve always been more of a Trae Young fan myself… It’sAJoke EveryoneRelax”

Neither Doncic nor any member of the Mavericks organization offered any response to the Lynx’s hostile jab, but Mavericks owner Mark Cuban did comment on Twitter saying, “Is it Chris Broussard social media takeover night?” joking about his own beef with the basketball media personality Chris Broussard.

When social media managers screw up in cases similar to this one, there’s usually an ensuing statement from the organization issuing an apology and the controversial tweets are almost immediately deleted.
