The Mets‘ offense launched two home runs, which was more than enough for Luis Severino, who pitched his first complete-game shutout since 2018 in New York’s 4-0 win over the Miami Marlins on a damp Saturday afternoon at Citi Field.
The Mets (64-59) have won consecutive games and claimed their first series win since the three-game set at the Colorado Rockies last week.
Here are the takeaways…
– The Mets offense got off to a quick start courtesy of Francisco Lindor‘s leadoff homer. The shortstop launched a 95 mph fastball down the middle from rookie Max Meyer over the fence in right-center field. Lindor finished 2-for-3 with a walk.
Pete Alonso mirrored his teammate with a 412-foot blast to lead off the second inning. Alonso’s blast was his 27th of the season but 100th at Citi Field, extending his lead. The Mets first baseman finished 1-for-3.
– Severino didn’t need much run support, as he was dealing on Saturday. The veteran right-hander mostly breezed through the Marlins lineup, pitching seven scoreless innings. He did pitch out of some trouble early in the game, but was helped by an unusual double play.
Vidal Brujan, sitting on second base with one out, left for third on a Xavier Edwards grounder to Lindor playing up the middle. The shortstop quickly threw to third and Brujan was eventually tagged out after a rundown. Jeff McNeil, who made the ga, turned and threw to Mark Vientos covering second base to get Edwards trying to reach second.
Severino went the distance (113 pitches/78 strikes) scattering four hits, one walk, one HBP while striking out eight batters. After allowing 14 runs in his previous three starts, Severino turned in a gem.
- Jesse Winker drove in the Mets’ third run with an RBI single and finished 1-for-3 while Vientos lined a double down the third-base line with two outs to drive in the Mets’ fourth run. Vientos, hitting in the two-hole for the third straight game, went 2-for-4. In those three games, Vientos is 5-for-12 with two home runs and four RBI.
With Vientos hitting second, Brandon Nimmo played in the three-hole for the second straight game and finished 1-for-4 with a triple and a run scored. As the three-hitter, Nimmo is now 3-for-9 with a home run and three RBI.

Severino saw Sean Manaea‘s performance on Friday and bested it, giving the Mets and their beleaguered bullpen another day to rest.
