In his first semester at North Carolina A&T State University, former NBA player JR Smith earned a 4.0 grade-point average. The 36-year-old also joined the golf team as a walk-on in his first year at the school. The two-time NBA champion who spent 16 years in the league is getting a degree in liberal studies.
Smith, who has tweeted frequently about his academic journey, posted a video of his reaction to getting a perfect GPA. Here’s part of what Smith said:
“I can’t even describe the feeling, I ain’t even gonna lie to you. I ain’t gonna lie. A lot of hard work went into that s— you know … Monday through Friday eight to eleven, sometimes longer, straight schoolwork. When you’re not used to going to school and doing all that s—, ahh man … freshman year you don’t think you can do it, you always hear about your disabilities.”
He ended the video, with a smile saying, “I’m happy about that one.”
You could see in the video just how reflective and emotional Smith was about the accomplishment.
At the start of his time in college, Smith often tweeted about struggling with school, staying up late writing papers and studying and meeting with professors after class to get extra help.
In keeping tradition with tweeting his college experience, Smith celebrated his GPA on social media.
Smith originally committed to play basketball in North Carolina after five years of high school, but instead declared for the 2004 NBA Draft.
