If Cox is ruled out of the tour altogether, England are unlikely to burden Pope with more responsibility on top of his duties at No. 3, meaning reinforcements are likely. Phil Salt and Durham’s Ollie Robinson could be in line for maiden Test call-ups, fitting the bill as engaging middle-order batters. Jonny Bairstow could also be an outside shot given he has a year remaining on his central contract. But having not featured for the Test squad since earning his 100th cap at the end of the India tour at the start of the year, it is unlikely he will be recalled at this juncture.
