The Tennessee Titans haven’t had a lot of positives to point to in what has been a disastrous season, but the signing of running back Tony Pollard, who was tasked with being the first running back after Derrick Henry, has been one of them.
Despite lackluster play all around him, Pollard has managed to thrive in the Titans’ offense. The former fourth-round pick of the Dallas Cowboys has totaled a career-high 1,017 rushing yards this season, marking the third straight year Pollard has broken the 1,000-yard mark. He is also just 124 scrimmage yards away from breaking his personal best in that category.
Pollard entered the weekend with a questionable tag after not practicing all week. We have seen the veteran running back play with limited or no practice on multiple occasions this season, but he won’t be able to do it this week.
Here’s the latest injury update on the Titans running back for the Week 17 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Is Tony Pollard playing today?
On Saturday, the Titans announced that running back Tony Pollard was downgraded from questionable to out for the Week 17 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Before he was downgraded, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that Pollard was going to give it a go with his ankle issue but caught the flu.
“Titans RB Tony Pollard has the flu, jeopardizing his status for Sunday at Jacksonville, per source,” Fowler wrote. “He is not expected to travel with the team today. He was on the injury report with an ankle issue but had planned to play through that.

There are two other reports that suggest the Titans were going to shut Pollard down for this week even before he got sick, so it appears the flu wasn’t what cancelled him out for this week.
“Titans actually shut down Tony Pollard for lingering ankle issue he’d been pushing through,” Titans beat writer Paul Kuharsky wrote. “Flu popped up today on top of it.”
“Pollard wasn’t going to go this week because of his ankle injury anyways,” AtoZ Sports’ Easton Freeze reported. “The Flu isn’t the thing keeping him from playing, just an added part of it. He’s been fighting through a really painful ankle injury for weeks now. His status in Week 18 is in question, though if he can grit it out to reach the incentives he’s near, I’d imagine he will.”
Pollard has been playing with an ankle injury for quite some time now, so it’s not surprising to see it finally catch up to him.
Whatever the case may be, the Titans will lean on fellow running back Tyjae Spears to carry the load on Sunday.
Spears scored two touchdowns and tallied 66 scrimmage yards in the loss to the Indianapolis Colts last week. He is most certainly a viable fantasy football option in a soft matchup against Jacksonville.
