Luke Shaw’s England importance
The opening game of England Euro 2020 tournament saw not a single left back in the starting squad and instead Gareth Southgate lead with two right-sided full backs with Kieran Trippier playing in an unorthodox left-sided role.
Since the arrival of Luke Shaw to the first team squad, it has transformed England’s effectiveness on the left flank.
The Manchester United man has been a creative force, especially from set pieces.
Furthermore to this the left-hand side looks very secure defensively with both United players, Shaw and Harry Maguire, forming a well-known partnership from their time together at Old Trafford.
John Stones and Walker the same from a Man City perspective on the right.
These performances from Shaw have not gone unnoticed and even some of the best to play the position have come out to comment.
Roberto Carlos’s Shaw praise
Of all the left-backs to play the position few are appreciated quite as much as former Real Madrid man Roberto Carlos.
Yet even he has noticed the improvement in Shaw and has publicly praised the England man.
“You can see he’s very motivated, his performance against Ukraine was very good. He’s been improving each game. I think he’s got everything to get to the top. He’s the left-back for England – that in itself says a lot,” said the Brazil legend.
