How to watch D.C. United vs. San Jose Earthquakes originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington

Looking to bounce back from its first loss under new manager Hernán Losada, D.C. United travels West for the only time of the 2021 MLS season to play the San Jose Earthquakes.

A Brendan Hines-Ike own goal in the 48th minute proved too much to overcome for Losada’s crew against the Revolution last Saturday. It was a game devoid of many clear-cut opportunities and a lack of pressing and energy that was so successful in D.C. United’s 2-1 season-opening win at home against New York City FC.

San Jose, on the other hand, comes into this contest coming off a dominant 3-1 bounce-back victory against FC Dallas. The Earthquakes lost their opener in Houston, but the forward partnership of Cade Cowell and Critian Espinoza proved too hot to handle for Dallas in game two.

Can Losada’s men come out and get the three points out west? Here’s how to watch.

D.C. United vs. Earthquakes: WHAT TO WATCH

The Earthquakes have started slowly in their opening two matches, and that’s surely something Losada will be looking to exploit with his United squad on Saturday night. In San Jose’s opener, Houston was the aggressor early on and that pressure culminated in goals on both sides of halftime. Last weekend, Dallas almost took advantage of a near calamitous error from keeper JT Marcinowski, who was caught in possession but made up for it with a point-blank save within the opening minute.

San Jose grew into the game and got their 1-2 punch involved more throughout, as Cowell, a 17-year-old local product, made most good things happen either through his vision or agile footwork to evade defenders. Cowell set up Espinoza’s goal for San Jose’s second goal fo the contest with a beautiful outside-of-the-foot through pass before scoring a clinical goal to seal it with a shake-and-bake that’ll make Frederic Brilliant quake in his boots.

D.C. remained severely shorthanded in their second match, as they were only able to have six options on the substitutes bench (three less than the league allowed nine). Starting keeper Bill Hamid remains out for the next few weeks, marquee wide midfielder Paul Arriola continues to get back to full fitness, and the team’s go-to goals scorer Ola Kamara was also out last time out. Fortunately for United’s backline: MLS’ all-time leading scorer Chris Wondolowski won’t be available due to the red card he picked up at the end of the Dallas win.

D.C. United vs. Earthquakes: PLAYERS TO WATCH

Edison Flores, Forward, D.C. United (0 goals, 3 assists in 13 appearances in 2020): The Black and Red’s No.10 is still searching for his first goal since arriving in January 2020 as the club’s second designated player. Flores is a skilled dribbler and chance maker, so look for him to get creative when trying to create opportunities for himself or another attack to score.

Christian Espinoza, Forward, San Jose Earthquakes (3 goals, 9 assists in 23 appearances in 2020): The Earthquakes two-time Offensive Player of the Year finished fourth in the league in assists last season, and has looked every bit as threatening in 2021.
