It is no secret that the Alabama Crimson Tide’s roster was affected massively by the transfer portal this past offseason, with a big reason as to why being the retirement of long-time head coach Nick Saban.
While a numerous amount of players entered the portal after the season ended, numerous others exited the program after Saban officially retired, which in turn made Alabama’s roster lack in depth at some key positions when Kalen DeBoer took over.
In all, this number of transfers during the offseason amounted to 30+ players overall, which included a few prominent 2023 starters for the Crimson Tide as well that have gone on to play similar roles with their new respective teams.
Here is a look at how every former Alabama transfer from this past offseason has performed up to this point in the 2024 college football season with a FBS program (Stats mentioned are current entering Week 10):
Eli Holstein, Quarterback – Pittsburgh Panthers
2024 Stats at Pittsburgh: 64.2 CMP%, 1,808 passing yards, 17:5 TD:INT ratio, 62 rushes, 286 rushing yards, 3 TD
After not seeing action at Alabama as a true freshman, Holstein transferred to Pittsburgh during the offseason where he has since become one of the ACC’s top quarterbacks. Holstein currently has the Panthers undefeated at 7-0 overall, and currently boats an impressive stat line that features a 64.2 completion percentage, 1,808 passing yards, and a 17:5 TD:INT ratio, while also having made an impact in the running game.
Julian Sayin, Quarterback – Ohio State Buckeyes
2024 Stats at Ohio State: 71.4 CMP%, 84 passing yards, 1:0 TD:INT ratio, 1 rush, 5 rushing yards
There were three incoming freshman who entered the transfer portal prior to the fall, the first, and arguably the biggest, of which was Sayin. The freshman has seen limited action this season as the backup to starter Will Howard at Ohio State, completing 5-of-7 passes for 84 yards and a score.
Roydell Williams, Running Back – Florida State Seminoles
2024 Stats at Florida State: 20 rushes, 54 yards, 2 TD, 5 receptions, 46 yards
After four seasons in Tuscaloosa, Williams hit the transfer portal during this past offseason where he ended up at Florida State. So far this season with the Seminoles, Williams has missed some time due to injury, but when healthy, has rushed for 54 yards and two touchdowns on 20 attempts, while also hauling in five receptions for 46 yards.UT
Ja’Corey Brooks, Wide Receiver – Louisville Cardinals
2024 Stats at Louisville: 44 receptions, 799 yards, 8 TD
As discussed previously, Brooks was already a known name due to his time at Alabama, but has since gone on to become one of the ACC’s top wide receivers since transferring to Louisville. In eight games at Louisville, Brooks is currently leading the ACC in both receiving yards and scores, amassing 799 yards and eight touchdowns on 44 receptions, and is very close to surpassing his three-year total at Alabama.
Isaiah Bond, Wide Receiver – Texas Longhorns
2024 Stats at Texas: 23 receptions, 380 yards, 4 TD, 2 rushes, 51 yards, 1 TD
Bond, who was one of Alabama’s top wide receivers a year ago, ranked among the most prominent names to enter the transfer portal in college football this past offseason, ending up at Texas. With the Longhorns, Bond has already set some career-high’s so far this season, hauling in 23 catches for 380 yards and four touchdowns as one of Texas’ top receivers.
Malik Benson, Wide Receiver – Florida State Seminoles
2024 Stats at Florida State: 22 receptions, 252 yards, 1 TD, 1 rush, -5 yards, 1 punt return, 3 yards
Benson transferred from the Crimson Tide’s program after only one season in Tuscaloosa, making the move to the ACC at Florida State. The wide receiver has already surpassed his totals from last season with the Crimson Tide, hauling in 22 receptions for 252 yards and a touchdown at Florida State, who has struggled mightily this season.
Tyler Buchner, Wide Receiver – Notre Dame Fighting Irish
2024 Stats at Notre Dame: 1 rush, 4 yards
The former Alabama quarterback transferred back to Notre Dame during this past offseason, but is with the Fighting Irish this time as a wide receiver. So far this year, Buchner has not played much, rushing for only four yards on one attempt.
Shazz Preston, Wide Receiver – Tulane Green Wave
2024 Stats at Tulane: N/A
After not recording any stats at Alabama, Preston entered the transfer portal during the offseason where he would end up at Tulane. Preston has yet to record any stats at Tulane.
Miles Kitselman, Tight End – Tennessee Volunteers
2024 Stats at Tennessee: 6 receptions, 78 yards, 2 TD
Kitselman was primarily a reserve tight end at Alabama, and has played a similar role this season at Tennessee. The tight end has set a career-high at Tennessee this season with six receptions for 78 yards and two touchdowns.
Amari Niblack, Tight End – Texas Longhorns
2024 Stats at Texas: 3 receptions, 29 yards
Niblack had a career-year at Alabama last season, hauling in 20 receptions for 327 yards and four touchdowns. With the Texas Longhorns now, Niblack has not seen as much action, making only a trio of catches for 29 yards.
Seth McLaughlin, Center – Ohio State Buckeyes
2024 Stats at Ohio State: Starting Center
A starter at center for Alabama, McLaughlin has continued in the same role this season with Ohio State. McLaughlin and the Buckeyes are currently cemented as one of college football’s top teams.
James Brockermeyer, Center – TCU Horned Frogs
2024 Stats at TCU: Starting Center
Brockermeyer was the final Alabama offensive lineman to transfer this past offseason, with the center ending up at TCU. The Alabama transfer has seen time with the Horned Frogs this year where he has started at center.
TJ Ferguson, Offensive Guard – Florida State Seminoles
2024 Stats at Florida State: Backup Guard
Ferguson was primarily a reserve option at Alabama, and has played a similar role at Florida State. The Alabama transfer has seen time this season with the Seminoles, but it has primarily been in a reserve role.
Monkell Goodwine, Defensive Line – South Carolina Gamecocks
2024 Stats at South Carolina: 7 tackles
Goodwine did not play much during his time in Tuscaloosa, but has found the field some at South Carolina. This has included a career-high seven tackles.
Anquin Barnes Jr., Defensive Line – Colorado Buffaloes
2024 Stats at Colorado: 6 tackles, 1 TFL
Not seeing much time at Alabama, Barnes transferred to Colorado over the offseason where he is on the field more with the Buffaloes. Barnes has already set career-high’s with six tackles and one TFL.
Isaiah Hastings, Defensive Line – Syracuse Orange
2024 Stats at Syracuse: 2 tackles
After limited action at Alabama, Hastings transferred to Syracuse where he hasn’t played much with the Orange. So far this season, Hastings has only compiled two tackles, which is a career-high.
Khurtiss Perry, Defensive Line – Virginia Tech Hokies
2024 Stats at Virginia Tech: N/A
Perry did not see any action during his time at Alabama, and went on to transfer to Virginia Tech. With the Hokies, Perry has yet to record any stats.
Kendrick Blackshire, Linebacker – UTSA Roadrunners
2024 Stats at UTSA: 7 tackles
Blackshire was one-of-two Alabama linebackers to transfer to UTSA over this past offseason. Up to this point in the season, Blackshire has compiled seven tackles for the UTSA defense.
Ian Jackson, Linebacker – UTSA Roadrunners
2024 Stats at UTSA: 2 tackles
Jackson is the second of those two linebackers to transfer from Alabama to UTSA during the offseason. The linebacker has however not seen much action with the Roadrunners, amassing only two tackles.
Shawn Murphy, Linebacker – Florida State Seminoles
2024 Stats at Florida State: N/A
Murphy saw limited action during his time at Alabama, amassing a combined five tackles over two seasons. The linebacker has yet to see action so far this season at Florida State.
Caleb Downs, Safety – Ohio State Buckeyes
2024 Stats at Ohio State: 31 tackles, 6 TFL, 0.5 sacks, 3 PD, 1 punt return, 8 yards
Likely the biggest name from Alabama’s roster to enter the transfer portal this past offseason was Downs, a safety who ended up at Ohio State. After a stellar freshman season at Alabama a year ago that included 107 tackles, as well as a SEC leading 70 solo tackles, Downs’ totals have not come close this season at Ohio State, sitting at only 31 tackles with a career-high six TFL.
Kristian Story, Safety – Kentucky Wildcats
2024 Stats at Kentucky: 13 tackles, 1 INT
Story has seen a similar amount of action to last season with the Kentucky Wildcats, compiling 13 tackles and an interception so far this year. The safety is closing in on his career-high in tackles for a season.
Peyton Woodyard, Safety – Oregon Ducks
2024 Stats at Oregon: 5 tackles
Woodyard, similar to Sayin, also transferred from Alabama prior to the fall where he ended up with the Oregon Ducks. So far this season, Woodyard has compiled five tackles with the Ducks.
2024 Stats at Georgia: N/A
Pope did not see much action at Alabama, and transferred within the SEC to the Georgia Bulldogs this past offseason. The Alabama transfer has yet to record any stats with the Bulldogs.
Trey Amos, Cornerback – Ole Miss Rebels
2024 Stats at Ole Miss: 32 tackles, 2 TFL, 3 INT, 10 PD
Amos has been one of the top performing defensive transfers during his first season at Ole Miss. A cornerback, Amos also currently leads the SEC with 10 passes defensed, and has also set career-high’s in interceptions, as well as nearing in tackles and TFL.
Dezz Ricks, Cornerback – Texas A&M Aggies
2024 Stats at Texas A&M: 13 tackles, 1 TFL, 1 INT, 2 PD
Ricks did not play much at Alabama as a true freshman, but has found the field more in 2024 with the Texas A&M Aggies. So far this season, Ricks has amassed a combined 13 tackles and one interception.
Earl Little Jr., Cornerback – Florida State Seminoles
2024 Stats at Florida State: 9 tackles, 1 TFL, 1 sack
After not playing much at Alabama, Little is in the middle of a career-year at Florida State. So far this season, Little has amassed nine tackles, one TFL, and one sack.
Antonio Kite, Cornerback – Auburn Tigers
2024 Stats at Auburn: 6 tackles, 1 INT, 1 FR
Kite’s offseason transfer was one of the more notable among Alabama players, as the cornerback went across the state to the Auburn Tigers. So far this season, Kite has seen some action with the Tigers, amassing six tackles with an interception.
Jameer Grimsley, Cornerback – Florida Gators
2024 Stats at Florida: N/A
Grimsley was the final of those aforementioned high school recruits that entered the transfer portal, with the cornerback ending up at Florida. The cornerback has yet to see action with Florida this season.
Upton Bellenfant, Kicker – Buffalo Bulls
2024 Stats at Buffalo: 10/11 FG, 13/13 XP
We conclude on special teams with Bellenfant, who transferred to Buffalo after not seeing time with the Crimson Tide. Bellenfant is currently enjoying a career-year at Buffalo, making 10-of-11 field goal attempts.
