After playing short-handed on the bench in Cleveland earlier this week, the Cubs received some reinforcements Friday for their weekend series in Detroit.

Prior to Friday’s game against the Tigers, Chicago activated infielder Nico Hoerner and starter Jake Arrieta from the 10-day injured list, immediately placing both in the starting lineup. Arrieta was slated to start the opener of the three-game set following a bout with a cut on his right thumb that impacted his pitches. Hoerner — after dealing with a left forearm strain — was slotted back into the eighth spot of the order as the second baseman.

The Cubs also had star Kris Bryant back in the order after he was held out of the starting lineup in Cleveland on Tuesday and Wednesday due to an illness. Bryant did make a pinch-hitting cameo in the seventh inning on Wednesday, but he was hit on the left wrist by a pitch from Cleveland’s Cal Quantrill and exited the game. Manager David Ross noted that Bryant was going to leave Wednesday’s game at that juncture no matter what, given that the third baseman/outfielder was playing while under the weather.
