It was quite a dramatic week in East Rutherford as the New York Giants made the fateful decision to bench Daniel Jones.
While demoting the No. 6 overall pick to the QB4 role on the depth chart was a bit surprising, it was also clear the Giants didn’t want to put themselves in a situation where Jones would have to see the field as the primary backup considering the injury guarantee clause in his contract.
And although several of his former teammates came out in support of Jones after the Giants revealed their decision to bench Jones, one NFL insider reported that it wasn’t a universal feeling.
According to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, frustrations were growing from both players and coaches with Jones’ performance under center.
“I can say there was quite a bit of frustration with Jones from players and coaches before his release, with how hesitant he was to pull the trigger and for all the throws he missed,” Breer wrote.
This wouldn’t come as a major surprise considering that has been the biggest crux of Jones’ game when he’s on the field. Since coming back from a torn ACL, Jones looked far more hesitant in the pocket than a sixth-year quarterback should.
Whether the Giants should have demoted Jones all the way to QB4 is a valid debate, but that move likely comes down to the protection from an injury.
Jones cleared waivers Monday and is expected to sign with a contending team as a backup as soon as possible so it will be interesting to see where he lands.
